      I personally like these screws because you can screw them in attached--thanks to the free rotating hanger system. Also, the large rotating hanger makes it easier to insert and extract the screw with thick gloves on. There is a catch, which is the rotating hanger can make clipping into it difficult at times, if you didn't place the screws while attached. Otherwise, these are awesome screws. They are a bit more expensive than competitors, but if I have the extra cash, I always go for these. The flute that comes with it is indeed unnecessarily bulky and difficult to attach to the harness. Good for storing the screws but not for actual uses during climbing.

          I don't believe there is perfect gear hence 4 stars but I have 4 of these and may be buying more just this week. The rotating hanger and flute were big selling points. On long multi pitch ice routes you can't afford to drop a single screw, a tired second can leave them clipped whilst extracting so won't get a shock when a shorty comes out quicker than expected. As to the flutes, they took a bit of getting used to and some local Norwegians to teach me how to use them effectively but they are fantastic and far less fiddly than clippers (when you know how). What you need to do is rack them on a bandolier or short sling rather than your belt - then they are available to either hand. To release them pull the tag and hook it over the lip of the flute thus the screw will come out real easy and stress free. If they're falling out when you don't want them too, try to figure why the rubber band isn't tight enough, try stretching it over the hook on the back of the flute where it's meant to be or if that still isn't tight enough slip a match stick in too. The other huge advantage is that they stop the screw chewing your waterproof shell/pants and you don't have a rubber end cap to drop & loose. I have other screws too and agree some may go in marginally easier / faster and be slightly easier to clip sometimes but I still really rate these, especially if they're cheaper than the competition at the time :) Happy safe climbing.           I do like the LaserSonics, they are a good screw. They bite well, and have less probelms with corrosion than some of the others I have.

          There are some cons to this screw though. The entire hanger pivots, which allows easy placement, but when you go to clip in it will often move or twist on you... The last thing you want to deal with in a shadey placement. As an added result of the hanger being able to twist, they will often twist or flip over while you are climbing, so when you reach for a screw on your rack they are all messed up. Also, the ice flutes are nearly useless. Use them for storage, nothing else; and even then they are bulky.

          None of these are huge problems; end of the day its one of the better screws I have used. I am taking a star for the problems resulting from the twisting hanger, and another for the price. This is the most expensive screw I own, it should be the first one I reach for. I recommend taking a look at the BDs or Omega Pacifics instead.

          Great screw, goes in smooth and the handle isn't all that bad. Yes the BD turbo's go in faster, but these are great if you're on a budget. The only thing I don't like are the 'flutes' that hold the screws. They come out too easy so you need to rack them by the handles to an ice clipper. I just got some of the rubber end caps off the BD's and use those to protect the tips. Plus the flutes are just too bulky and unnecessary.

            Just tested Petzl vs BDs vs DMMs on a climb. DMMs are even easier to handle with gloves BUT one can so easily clip into Petzls and still turn them in, one can even pre clip for pro if it is really hairy.
            I was just trying out a method for hanging the flute on a flat 1" webbing sling prior to ordering my next one. Lo and behold, Hamish from the UK recommends using the sling to hang a brace of flutes !!!! That is all you need to make it perfect. Best screws they ARE.
