Comments about ACR Electronics Terrafix 406 GPS I Personal Locator Beacon:
You certainly don't have to backpack solo like I do or be close to 60 years old like I am to carry this kind of insurance. But mitigating wilderness risk with a real 406MHZ PLB is the best and most rational thing to do when your personal risk goes up with age. I don't want to communicate or "check in" when I'm on the trail, either. I only want my PLB to do ONE THING WELL when I push any buttons at all on it: I want it to directly alert the nearest actual SAR org that I can't get out on my own. Period. And I want my coded signal to go directly into the COSPAS/SARSAT system designed specifically for remote rescue and one that experiences few, if any, false alarms. My research told me that the ACR PLB was built to do just this thing. That's why I carry this unfortunately rather heavy device. It's well worth the extra ounces.
