Comments about Katadyn Carbon Cartridge:
There aren't a lot of standalone charcoal filters out there so I appreciate the effort but they have a ways to go to get their five stars on this one.
The charcoal comes in a packet. You open the filter, pour it in and screw the two filter halves back together. That part is fairly simple.
It does do the job, which in my case is removing the chlorine I add to my water to kill viruses, but take a look at the picture of the filter. The inlet and outlet are tapered which makes it difficult to get hoses to stay put. Even using a clamp, I found it difficult to get the hose to stay on. An annular ridge would've been helpful in keeping the clamp on while still facilitating getting the hose off drying and cleaning the filter.
It's important to dry filters between trips so as not to get things growing in them in storage. It was necessary to open the filter to let the charcoal dry out. Inevitably some charcoal granules would get into the threads and on the O ring and it was a pain getting them all cleaned off. It would be nice if they supplied some sort of mesh to put over the charcoal to keep it in place.
I recommend this filter because it does the job, but I'm still looking for one that is more convenient to use.
