Comments about Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Water Bottle:
This is a great water filter for use anywhere. We used it for 3 weeks traveling around Viet Nam & Hong Kong, as well as prvious trips to Costa Rica & Mexico and have never gotten sick. It's easy to use and reliable. I've never tasted any iodine taste. We use it primarily in our hotel room and purchase bottled water when we're out and about. It's so convenient, esp on arrival when you haven't quite got your feet on the ground to figure out where to buy water, or it's late at night and all you want to do is brush your teeth. It takes a little pressure to get the water through the filters but it's not difficult. If backpacking I wouldn't rely on this as the primary source of water due to low flow, i.e. it would be difficult to fill up a pot of water.

Comments about Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Water Bottle:
I bought this filter bottle for a backpack trip through Chile. Travelling through mostly rural areas off the beaten path, I always had it with me in case the local water source was questionable. I also used it on a few hikes in the Parques Nacionales with water from lakes and streams. In my 9 weeks of travel I never got sick, not even a case of "traveler's diarrhea." The bottle was super handy, lightweight, and easy to carry around. The only drawback is that the flow of water comes out pretty slow when you squeeze so you can't exactly chug a refreshing bottle of water when your really thirsty.

Comments about Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Water Bottle:
I just got and used my bottle for the first time. Used it for a 3 day fishing trip. I usually keep a camelback on my back when fly fishing for longer than a couple of hours. The first day I took the camelback and the Katadyn, but the second and third I left the camelback behind,l and I love the lack of extra gear and weight!
I read a negative review here, and I have to wonder whether the person that said they couldn't prime it forgot to take the seal off the top of the Virastat portion of the filter as stated in the directions. I had absolutely no problem priming those first two bottles in mine, but i can see what might happen if you didn't follow directions.
I love this bottle!

A great filter for traveling!
I'm writing this review, sitting at the airport on my way home from Central America, a place where one has to be wary of the water you drink to be sure! This is my second trip with my Katadyn filter and stayed "regular" and healthy both times!
Beauty is you can fill it up anywhere, and its great for the airports too! As soon as you're through baggage check, fond the nearest water, whether it be fountain or even a sink, and you're hydrated and good to go again!
Cheap product for its ease and usefulness!
It's a bit hard to pump the water out without sucking on the spout, so don't plan on using it as your main filtration devise! Also run about 6 bottles of water through a new filter, despite the recommended 2, to remove the worst of the iodine taste!

This is a great waterbottle, though it is a little hard to get the water out if you want it fast. It also leaves a bit of iodine in your mouth but that was the second time, maybe it will wear off?

Have used it for our trips to Grant Teton hiking and YellowStone hiking. Was a life saver on our long Grand Teton hike, was able to dip into spring and drink cold water immediately. After first two refills, water tasted good and so long that you do not suck on it, will not even taste iodine. Also, when I did not run the bottle completely run out of water, after refill there was not problem at all to pump it right away.
Definitely a purchase for years to come. Now I always keep it in my car and have water anytime anywhere.

Comments about Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Water Bottle:
When you get past the priming process, it really doesn't get much better than this. It filters bacteria and virii, is incredibly simple, has a good capacity, and is easily serviceable.
The priming process simply involves a lot of squeezing, which can get old. Instead of filling it up and squeezing a whole bottle through the filter, i'd squeeze about half out and refill it.
Since then it's worked great. water tastes great. it's pretty great overall.

I used this on a recent 24 mile overnight hike in Myakka River State Park in Florida. I read the directions for once so I knew what to expect. I found the priming process to be straightforward, and the flow rate, although not stunning, is adequate. I used it to fill my large Platypus reservoir in about 15-20 minutes (just a camp chore). Considering how bad the water looked and smelled pre-filtering, I had no complaints with the post-filtered taste. And I didn't die, so it must work!

Comments about Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Water Bottle:
I've owned a cheaper filtration bottle for several years, and really liked it. I decided to upgrade to a Katadyne, but was disappointed. I like the modular design, and the fact that it can be used with or without the filter. But I tried using it without the filter, and the output was barely more than a trickle. I didn't even try it with the filter in place, but I imagine it's much worse. Maybe I just had a defective bottle.

Comments about Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Water Bottle:
A friend in Iraq suggested I try this as he used one over there with great success. I needed something between a steripen and a full on pumping type filter for use in backcountry hunting and scouting trips. I actually got it half price on clearance at REI and it would have been worth full price. Very simple to use and since I hunt where there is water, I don't have to worry about rationing or carrying in my own water. Pump was easy to prime, easy to use and tasted great after dumping first two bottles full. I am usually wary about iodine based purifiers as I am slightly allergic, but no problems and I have not been sickened even by filling bottle from barely flowing scary looking water holes!
