Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Short:

I have used everything from blue closed cell foam pads (least comfortable, but lightest) to wonderful self-inflating pads that feel like mattresses (but are heavy). There is no perfect design, only designs that fit your particular constraints. For me this is adequately comfortable and very light weight. The price is right. I strap it on the outside of my pack (uncovered) vertically and so bulk isn't a big problem. These pads are very popular with experienced people. The insulating value is adequate for freezing conditions, however, for sleeping on snow you need the longer version.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Short:

I love the 3/4 Ridgerest. Though it takes a night or two of getting used to, you won't miss the weight of inflatables. I only met one other hiker in 3 weeks on the AT that had this pad, but we agreed there was none better. It cushions the worst of a root or a plywood platform, and for weight it KICKS BOOTY. If you have a slick bag, don't camp on an incline. I have been using this pad as my only bed for the past month--and we are talking apartment--to save hassle, and I couldn't be happier. I know people are worried that they won't be comfortable, but if you want to reduce your pack weight, you really have to give this pad a try.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Short:

I hike all over the U.S., sometimes on long extended hikes. The inflating pads just never could hold up for me. Time after time, I would find myself patching mid hike. This pad is quite light and hassle free. A superb buy for the money... I'm getting extras.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Short:

I prefere the short version over the regular because I can roll my tent inside of it and hang it horizontally from the back bottom straps of my backpack. A person only requires padding under their legs if they are camping in the snow (The snow - are you nuts!?!) It is comfortable for a short nap or rest, and for youngsters under 35 it's probably great for a full night's sleep. However, at the age of 43 my back isn't what it used to be. For people prone to getting stiff backs at night an air mattress might be worth the extra money and weight.

Cons

  • Bulky Roll Up

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Short:

The Thermarest ridgerest small pad is the most comfortable pad, and lightest pad that i own! I have bought OTHER pads. But they do not match to this pad. The reason I bought this pad is because of the price, thickness and durability. The only bad thing (but it does not matter to me) is that it has a kind of bulky roll up.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Short:

I have been using my 3/4 length Ridge-Rest all winter in below freezing temperatures and I have been warm and comfortable every night. I like that I don't have to be very careful with it around a fire like I would have to be with a self inflating pad. If I want a place to sit I just unstrapp it from the bottom of my pack and unroll it for a comfortable seat and it is just as easy to put it back when I am ready to go. And the best thing I like about the pad is it will probably last forever.

Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest - Short:

I cut this pad down to fit from shoulders to under the butt. IT works perfect for my ultralight kit. It does roll a bit bulky, but i use it in a frameless pack rolled, inserted and then i pack into the tube to give the pack some structure. I love this pad and have no reason to loke for another. Much better than a 3/8" flat foam pad!!
