Great sandals for water AND hiking.
With lots of hiking on trails and through water, I didn't want take 2 pairs of shoe on my 4-day trip to Havasupai. Hiking over 50 miles on rough trials and in Havasu creek to the Colorado river, these sandals were comfortable and provided great grip. The only negative is that I had to remove small rocks in the sandals every now and then.
Barely Lasted One Year!
I bought these at REI just shy of one year ago this month. Within the same week the toe cap on the left shoe became detached from the rest of the shoe on the top side. Then a couple days later the rear anchor point on the right shoe came out of the footbed. This was my second pair of this model of Keen shoes and the first pair last 8+ years. I don't know what's going on with Keen quality but sure would be nice if they addressed it because this latest pair was a total let down.
Not what they used to be
I have been wearing Keen Newports since shortly after they were introduced in the early 2000's. I'm probably on my 6th or 7th pair at this point. The original pair of sandals lasted for at least 5 summers before I retired them due to the soles being worn out. The tops were still very functional. Since Keen decided to offshore their production the quality is now nonexistent. This pair, which was made in Mexico, started off last summer and I have been wearing them for about the past 2 months so total wear time on these is about 8 months. If you look at the photo of the sole you can see that they are far from being worn out. The uppers however are another story. The stretch material under the straps is disintegrating, the stitching on the heel gussets has given out and you can see where one of the heel straps was never fully under the gusset when it was stitched. So sad how far this once great product has fallen. Bass Pro sells a knock off version of these sandals for about $25, if I'm buying imported junk I'd rather spend less
Great and fast and good service.
Great fast and good service, Good product. thank you
Reviews about poor quality are correct.
My oldest Keen Clearwater sandal separated from the sole yesterday on a 5 mile hike. I love the shoes, so I decided to buy another Clearwater along with another Newport H2. They are in the shopping when I decided to read the reviews. After reading about the stitching problems on Newport’s I took a look at mine. Same issue, I had not looked before. See photo. I love the way the shoes work and have 5 pairs total in both Newport and Clearwater styles. Debating whether to remove the pairs from the cart. May go to shoe repair shop and see how much cost to reinforce the stitching. After so many complaints it seems Keen would correct this obvious quality issue.
Great shoe - very poor quality
Love these sandals.... very comfortable to wear. However, they don't last as long as they should. Soles of shoe have plenty of life left in them, however, the stitching at back is falling apart. Very poor quality. The same thing happened to a previous pair that I owned. Very disappointing.
Buyer beware: loved these shoes, but flawed design
I loved these KEEN Newport H2s. They are the go anywhere, do anything shoe, from camping to light hiking to running around in the water. Unfortunately, they were short lived. I’ve owned them for 4 years and worn them maybe 50 times on various outdoor excursions. The stitching began to fail where the heel strap meets the bridge straps after about a year. I've hand sewn them back together twice. This is a known defect as you can from the various other customer reviews. I tried contacting KEEN directly, but their answer was to send a coupon for a new pair. While this works from a business perspective, it is terrible for the customer and environment. The shoes are really cool, but just know that you’ll be throwing them away and replacing them regularly. I wish KEEN would just acknowledge the issue and offer a repair service to keep these out of a landfill.
Falling Apart at the Seams!
I gave this 2 stars because I really like the sandal fit and foot protection. Great for all around summer wear. But....they fall apart at critical seams. See photo of pair failing in 3 of 4 stress points. For $100 and with known problem (see other reviews) we should expect more from Keen. How much does better thread cost??
Abysmal quality.
This is the second summer I've worn these sandals. I switched from Chacos as I really wanted the closed toe design for days on the river. Unfortunately at the end of last summer a bit of the side stitching was coming undone. At this point it's almost fully pulled out on both sandals. I've included a picture of the tread to show how much life should be left if they weren't falling apart. I had no luck with Keen as they only have a one year warranty and wasn't able to return them to REI as I bought them in May 2013. In my opinion, outdoor gear should be much tougher than this especially considering I haven't worn them ALL that much. Looks like I'll be switching to another brand as I can't justify spending this type of money on sandals that aren't going to last more than a couple of summers. I'd think either Keen or REI would stand behind the product a little bit more as well, especially since looking at other reviews this is a known failure of the product. I'm going to try Gorilla Glue as a fix so I can at least continue to wear them but this shouldn't be necessary.
Beware of defective stitching
Stitching around elastic heel section came completely loose on both sandals first day of wading creeks in Utah slick rock area. Had to make a field repair to keep going. Emailed Keen with pictures expressing concerns, they finally responded to my second email stating they would consider a refund when I had stated in the email I already had a refund. They did not respond to investigating the defective stitching. I have seen the same defective stitching on the same sandal at various stores. I don't think their concern or market really includes rugged environments. I would recommend avoiding this product unless application is very light duty.
