Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:
I can see why this little self-heating oven is in such a small package; it's good for 5 uses and a couple days' worth of hot meals. Its best feature is its compact size. The meal was tasty and hot. And I mean hot! We could have also heated a beverage after making our beef stew. It's got super-duper hand warmer type heaters that you put in the bottom of the bag with water and the dissolved salt tablet. Being that my minimalist camping days are 20 years behind me, I LOVE this product because you can take this on trips when a stove/fuel is difficult to carry on a plane ie., on a backcountry trip in another country. I appreciate the convenience and its reusability leaves a low-carbon footprint. Your meals come out to $11 bucks for two people, when you factor in each time you use 1 oven plus the 8 bucks it costs to buy the freeze dried food, so its pretty cheap. And all you need is drinking water. Here is a video of us testing the product; make sure small children, pets etc. are away from the product, follow the instructions...

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:
This heater is plenty hot enough to do the job. It kept my breakfast wrap stuffing warm for quite some time. All the pro-packs were piping hot and tastey. This product is fool-proof, light and packable, and can be used without a fire permit. It would be nice to be able to buy recharge kits and re-ue the foil pouch. For right now, I stick the left-over pouches in with my SoCal survival kit to replace the cheesy heater pouches that my civilian MREs are sold with.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:
Good alternative to using a stove, and somewhat lighter for short trips. Good for airplane travel since it's often difficult to bring a gas burning stove on the airplane.
I used it most recently in Big Bend Nat'l Park on a 2 night backpacking trip.
Gets the food pretty hot, but takes a bit longer than a stove. Doesn't boil the water, so be sure you're using treated water. It had enough heat left after I cooked my freeze dried food to heat up water for tea.
You need to use 100 ml of salt water to activate the heating pad. A bottle is provided, and you need to mix in a salt tablet. The salt tablets in my kit were all crushed when I opened the package, so I didn't know for sure how much salt to add, but it did end up working by just guessing. Since I had to pack in all my water due to the lack of reliable water sources in Big Bend, this added a pound to the effective weight I had to carry.
It would be nice to make the stove a bit more versatile by perhaps having a resuable oven bag and sell the heat pack separately, and also indicate in the instruction how much salt to use. I think I could have also gotten away with smaller heat packs. They would have taken longer to heat up the food, but I would have appreciated the reduction in weight.
Service and delivery comments:
Salt tablets were crushed when the pack was opened.

Really awesome idea. Works great once you understand it. And makes the mountain meals without having to boil your own water. Everything happens inside the bag and in a few minutes you have a meal to eat. I would highly recommend this product to anyone.

I Love this oven! I used it for the first time at a local day hike in the national park. It warmed my food pretty well, 20 minutes waiting. It was easy to use and clean up. No fire stove needed at all, this is excellent when there is a fire ban.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:
The oven is a decent alternative for lugging fuel and stoves. The downside is that it takes longer, but just setup camp while the food cooks. I have found that you need to add the time the oven says to cook for TO the time the food says. For instance, if the oven says 20minutes... and the Eggs say 15... your probably looking at 30-35minutes to get good Eggs.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:
Includes everything for 5 uses, just add 100ml of water per use. It was the only stove for 4 people (1 night) with no problem. In the morning we heated 3C water in a metal canteen for oatmeal and hot chocolate, and it got very hot from 45-50F ambient. Slightly bulky and limited reuses, but a great inexpensive option for the occasional backpacker.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:
Used the Mountain House Stove for the first time on a day hike to Acadia National Park in Maine. Decided to try this route prior to purchasing a Pocket Rocket + cookware... I must say, its very easy to use, and heats up meals in 15-20 minutes starting with ambient temp water. My only complaint --- the heating pad stays so hot for so long, that it made packing up to leave the area a little more difficult, because placing the steaming hot stove back in my pack was not a good idea... If you are packing in/out all of your supplies, be prepared for some "post meal" cool down time... Great idea. Now if they only sold the heating pads / salt tablets separately --- you could extend the 5 use stove for use over a larger # of meals.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:
I took two of these on a backpacking trip through the Yellowstone backcountry. They worked exactly as advertised. Quick and easy to set up. Worked great for Mountain House hot dinner and breakfast pouches. You can prepare one 2-person meal or two of the smaller 1-person meals in the "oven".
The food tastes the same as if it's prepared with boiling water, it just takes 20 minutes instead of 8. You can't really overcook the pouches of food. So, I would get the Mountain Oven going and then help set up camp while it heated the food.
The only drawback may be that packing a whole bunch of these things (10 or so) can take up more room in your pack than one small stove. So, a true minimalist who is planning to prepare a lot of meals may prefer to just pack a small stove.
You also need to make sure that you will have potable water available to put in the food pouch, since you won't be boiling water for food prep.
If you plan on packing more than five meals worth of "oven" supplies, ditch the extra oven pouches and water bottles. You only really need one oven pouch (unless you lose or destroy it) and one water bottle along with as many heating pads and salt tablets as you need to prepare all your meals.
We loved the product and would definitely take them on future backbacking trips.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:
I love this product. I have to admit I doubted it would work well, but I was suprised! Nice hot food in 15 and easy to use. I thought it would be messy but it really wasnt, just put the heat pack in the bigger package, add the water with salt tablet, and then stick in the pack of food. Simple! I cant say if it would be great for high altitude but it sure worked well for a casual hike.
