Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:

Excellent stove alternative if you are doing the freeze dried thing. Food comes out piping hot and ready to eat. Great when you can't burn wood and don't want to deal with fuel.

A few notes: 1) As the package states, it takes 20 minutes, not 15 as described here; 2) You might want to add a little less water to the meals or they can be a bit soupy; 3) Keep the zip seals clean or it can be a real pain to get them closed again.

My only complaint (more of a suggestion, really) is that I wish Mountain House would come up with a system that is reusable over the long term, instead of just five times. Make the "oven" bag a little more robust, sell refills for the heat packs and salt tabs, and maybe offer empty reusable pouches for heating water and other things.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:

The best invention since the wheel. Heats up fd foods with ease. I have also used this with [...] Nalgene water bottles and Mud Gourmet Coffee to heat up a nice cup of morning brew (use treated water). Works with most fd food packs.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:

I took two of these on a backpacking trip through the Yellowstone backcountry. They worked exactly as advertised. Quick and easy to set up. Worked great for Mountain House hot dinner and breakfast pouches. You can prepare one 2-person meal or two of the smaller 1-person meals in the "oven".

The food tastes the same as if it's prepared with boiling water, it just takes 20 minutes instead of 8. You can't really overcook the pouches of food. So, I would get the Mountain Oven going and then help set up camp while it heated the food.

The only drawback may be that packing a whole bunch of these things (10 or so) can take up more room in your pack than one small stove. So, a true minimalist who is planning to prepare a lot of meals may prefer to just pack a small stove.

You also need to make sure that you will have potable water available to put in the food pouch, since you won't be boiling water for food prep.

If you plan on packing more than five meals worth of "oven" supplies, ditch the extra oven pouches and water bottles. You only really need one oven pouch (unless you lose or destroy it) and one water bottle along with as many heating pads and salt tablets as you need to prepare all your meals.

We loved the product and would definitely take them on future backbacking trips.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:

I love this product. I have to admit I doubted it would work well, but I was suprised! Nice hot food in 15 and easy to use. I thought it would be messy but it really wasnt, just put the heat pack in the bigger package, add the water with salt tablet, and then stick in the pack of food. Simple! I cant say if it would be great for high altitude but it sure worked well for a casual hike.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:

Used the Mountain House Stove for the first time on a day hike to Acadia National Park in Maine. Decided to try this route prior to purchasing a Pocket Rocket + cookware... I must say, its very easy to use, and heats up meals in 15-20 minutes starting with ambient temp water. My only complaint --- the heating pad stays so hot for so long, that it made packing up to leave the area a little more difficult, because placing the steaming hot stove back in my pack was not a good idea... If you are packing in/out all of your supplies, be prepared for some "post meal" cool down time... Great idea. Now if they only sold the heating pads / salt tablets separately --- you could extend the 5 use stove for use over a larger # of meals.

Comments about Mountain House Mountain Oven:

Includes everything for 5 uses, just add 100ml of water per use. It was the only stove for 4 people (1 night) with no problem. In the morning we heated 3C water in a metal canteen for oatmeal and hot chocolate, and it got very hot from 45-50F ambient. Slightly bulky and limited reuses, but a great inexpensive option for the occasional backpacker.
