Comments about Backpack Gourmet:
I love cookbooks and I love camping/backpacking, so this book was a natural choice. I've read (and own) other backpacking cookbooks that are a mish-mash of ingredients and recipes, often incorporating many premade, prepackaged, commercial ingredients. What I like about this book, is that it is full of original, healthy, and TASTY recipes. This book goes way beyond GORP, yet the recipes are easy to follow and mostly limited to 8-12 ingredients (including spices).
The book is well-organized in five chapters: one pot meals; breakfast and lunch; soups and stews, and pasta dishes and casseroles. A good number of vegetarian recipes.
I absolutely love the ability to prepare my own dehydrated meals and have something so tasty, without tons of salt and other preservatives.
One thing I will add, the dehyrdating times listed for most of the recipes are optimistic. I have a nice quality dehydrator, but find that most of the recipes take 2-3 hours more than listed to fully dry out. Perhaps this is because I put too much food on each tray (making a thicker layer to dry out) or that I am just very very careful to extract out all of the mositure since I want to insure an extended shelf life. In any case, this cookbook is absolutely wonderful and I would highly recommend it to anyone!
