Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Large:
This is the best dog pack that I have bought. It seems that all dog packs shift weird and constantly need adjustment, its almost worth me carrying the canine gear. But of the three brands that I have tried Granite Gear seems to need the least amount of attention to detail. I have a chocolate lab that thinks he is a football player when wearing his pack. He runs into everything. It has been a year since we first used the pack and it is still in good shape, and seems to be comfortable on my dog. He goes swimming with his pack on also, hence a need for a waterproof dog food container. Good pack, but an accesory not a necessity.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Large:
Two straps broke after less than one month of using this backpack. I have a big dog, and we did not use the pack daintily. However, it was not overloaded. Because of the padding at the location of the strap attachment, it was not an easy repair either.

I loved the pack at first but following the first two long trips, two of the straps fell apart. A third broke when she chewed it (obviously not the pack's fault on that one). Regardless I found it to lack any real durability and [...]

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Large:
First of all let me address others who have mentioned the shifting load/unbalancing possiblity. I found absolutely no issue here. Yes, the bags (paniers)are without compartments and the person packing (you) has to balance the load...but talk to any packer and those are given conditions. As long as your IQ is better than a monkey's the balancing should be no prob and using a coat or fleece to avoid load shift works wonders. I have found an occasional small rock to help balance along the trail as well.
Second, let me adress the strapping system, or lack thereof. After our 80 lb. lab decided that the pack was his, and therefore chewed through the belly strap (cinch), I had to improvise using 2 D-rings, but I've never tightened the strap all the way. Without padding I find the cinch to be pretty much useless. Our lab has very little fur on his belly so I'm worried about chafing and as long as the pack is properly balanced I have found absolutely no issues with the cinch being exgtremely loose. The breast strap is also almost useless. Because it is not attatched to the cinch in any way it tends to choke on steep upgrades. Basically under any "tricky" circumstances the breast strap finds its most important use when I take off the pack and sling it on my shoulder to make sure our dog stays safe when there's doubt.
My next pack (for dog number 2 who is almost old enough) will definitely NOT be this pack. Size is good, and I found the balance pretty decent with that shelfy back pad thing, not to mention the price when on sale, but the next pack needs to have a better strapping system so I'm not worried about my dog falling to his death or choking himself.

The packs are frequently used on overnight backpacking trips and long day hikes. The packs have been is use for about three years in Desolation Wilderness and have stood up to alot of granite some brush and very energetic dogs who will swim with them on at the sight of water(BUY DRY BAGS). The packs are tossed into the washing machine after every trip and come out looking good.
The only downside is that the pack chafes the dogs raw where the back of thier front legs strike the pack (Probably due to the very thin coat of my dogs, Body Glide helps a little.). If not loaded properly the pack will become lopsided in motion(More user error than pack error, just load the pack evenly on weight.)
The chaffing is enough for me to try another brand or style when I get another Weim or when one of these packs finally wears out.

I own two dogs and we do a lot of hiking together. I bought this pack so my youngest dog could carry the water and treats of himself and the eldest dog. This pack is awesome and my dog doesn't even know he is wearing it! It's easy to fit, easy to put on, and the pockets are VERY roomy. I would recommend this to other!

I like the product because our dog Rocky can carry his own food and water. It slides around a little more than I would like and keeping him on a leash is a little more difficult due to the bag and leash getting cuaght up. Over all a good product

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Large:
I've had some other dog packs in past decades but this one is the best. First of all, the pad that rides along the dog's spine is wonderful; this distributes the weight evenly and gently. Secondly, the fabric is very tough and stands up well to our backcountry jaunts through greenbriar, doghobble, and blackberry. Lastly, the quality of construction is commendable.

So I have a 2.5 year old german shep/pointer mix pup. I say pup because she prefers recess at obedience class rather than the actually instructional. Well, the truth is that I don't go hiking much with her, but I do go on very long walks. In about a weekend, we average around 4 miles a day with an hour at the dog park. During the week I take her with me for all my errands and a mile jog every night. With such a loyal companion, how could I not give her the duty to carry some of my stuff?
On my errands I put mail or packages into the pack and she carries them without a fuss! On walks where I want to tire her out a little, I bring an extra nalgene of water for the both of us. And don't forget about Christmas! Nothing says "MERRY CHRISTMAS" better than a dog bringing in all the gifts for everyone in her pack.
The Granite Gear pack is light, and not in the least cumbersome! I can't really say anything about the odor cuz my dog doesn't really get to the point of horrendous B.O.. But as a pack, this is a great one! the foam padding on the back evenly distributes the weight of whatever is inside and goes easy on her spine. The chest strap aides really well in keeping the pack sturdy on her and as long as you evenly distribute the weigh in the pack, it shouldn't sag either way!

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Large:
There are no compartments so the pack can slide from weight dist. it is hard to keep the weight even. I have trouble using this pack to hold anything other than very light things for fear of putting strain on my dog. She is a St. Bernard and can carry the weight, but even a 130 lb girl can get lopsided on a steep trail.
