Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
We climbed Mount Rainier over Labor Day weekend 2009 we got to Camp Muir 10,100 and no further. Winds got over 100 mph and it snowed 6 feet on us. This Jacket kept me warm for the 2 days we were at Camp Muir weathering the storm. Several of us rented this jacket and I am glad I did considering the storm we were in. I am gong back to summit this time this July 2010 and I am taking this jacket with me.

Don't Confuse this with the Subzero Parka. Some of the review here are mentioning that one. This is the Jacket. Go to MTn HW website and you'll see they are different. I believe the only big difference is the length and the parks's hood is intergrated. The SL parka is slightly longer. Both are 650 fill, which should not be used or trusted solely in places such as...oh say, siberia, or Manchuria. I wouldn't trust a lightly 650-filled jacket as my main insulation. 800 or higher at least, and only baffled construction. Especially with wind chill, as convective heat loss will easily steal away a few centimeters of your effective insulation. The Sub zero jacket and parka are both great, although they have their quirks (i'm not a fan of the non-integrated hood with the flappies and the giant cuffs). They will serve you well, but do your research, get a little experience with what insulation will do and where, and don't trust a price tag blindly, just because it's expensive doesn't mean it'll perform at expedition standards. These are great quality, and will work well, just be careful what you're trusting your outerwear to do. I'd take this to about -20F with NO wind at a minimum and i'd still wear some fleecies underneath. Warmer with a wind chill.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
First lets just say that I love this jacket. It seems more durable and a lot tougher than my previous NF Nuptse Jacket. The jacket also seems very resistant to water because of the conduit fabric that Mt. Hardware uses on the entire exterior of the jacket. the down side to this is that it doesn't compress down as much as I'd like. but you can't have everything. The conduit also makes it much more wind proof than previous down jackets I've owned. I used it on a 4 day trip to Devils Pass Forrest service cabin in January in Alaska and was quite happy with it. The down hood is a must to keep warm with the wind blowing. I wouldn't trust it in true sub zero temps without a lot of insulation underneath it though. But if you want a pretty good all around winter jacket this is the one you want.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
I am on my second sub zero jacket, I work and play in the field every day in all kinds of conditions. when it gets below 10 degrees I put the sub zero on. Ive worn this jacket in 25 below temps riding a snow machine traveling 30 to 40 miles an hour[wind chill factor] for 8 hours a day wearing a medium wt. smart wool shirt, fleece and sub zero jacket and have been fine. I really like the outside of the arms and on the shoulders as it is reinforced with heavy duty nylon which is great for heavy backpacks. The only complaint I have is their is not enough loft in the under side of the forearm and anything made with down is not waterproof. As far as it being short I have a short torso so its perfect and fits well with a harness. Something to think about as well when buying this jacket is that some people play hot, sleep hot and others play cold and sleep cold, If your on the cold side and are intending to use this jacket for anything below 0 get something with a higher fill power.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
This is a great WARM jacket. As a photographer I am often out early but just standing and waiting for the dawn. That means I need a jacket that keeps me warm when not moving. I have a TNF Optimus Redpoint that is a great jacket for hiking in cold conditions but when standing around for long periods of time I sometimes want/need something warmer. That is where this jacket comes in.
I put this on, pull up the hood, and I stay warm even at below freezing temps.
The fit is right. Not too small, but not huge either. You can do some layering under it but if you want it as a belay parka think of going up a size.
I find the waist is about right for a climber. Others talk of it being too short. I find it works for me. I am tall but by the Osprey backpack measurer, I am right at that breakpoint between a medium and large sized pack. My take is that a climber would not want this jacket cut any longer as this allows the wearing of a harness without too much jacket interference.
Other big pluses to it are the fleece in the handwarmer pockets, the Conduit SL, and the hood. The hood really warms up you, a big difference in the 20's and below. The fleece in pockets is a nice touch that cold hands do appreciate. The Conduit SL makes it a usuable piece in snow and sleet where a plain down jacket might wet out.
MH makes three jackets in this series, the jacket, hooded jacket, and hooded parka. I'd say skip the jacket. If you need that level of down warmth then get a hooded version. If you do not need that much warmth, get a lighter 800 fill down sweater. If you need the warmth the hooded jacket and the parka are the better choices. If you can stand the shorter climbers cut get this one, if you need a longer cut get the parka.
This has kept me warm in blizzards in Colorado and Wyoming. I have stood in 2 foot deep powder with big wet flakes swirling in and been really warm. This is a great jacket.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
First of all, this is NOT an expedition weight jacket (of course, if you are getting expedition advise thru REI reviews, god help you); MH makes the absolute zero for that purpose.
A lot of jackets will keep you warm around town, and if that's why you purchased it, thanks for keeping the price lower for the rest of us :).
The sizing is fairly generous with NO layering. I don't have any experience with the jacket in the rain (though I imagine it'd be too warm for non freezing temps with layering); it doesn't get wet when snowing. That said, I found it to be the perfect jacket for transitioning between very rigorous activity (ice climbing, etc) and resting: take it off for exercise and put it back on when standing around. It'll more than keep you warm, but not overkill. The abrasion resistant outer material makes sure the jacket will hold up over time.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
This will be my third season wearing this jacket in the midwest and so far it is holding up really well. If you layer well this jacket will keep you warm. It's windproof and definitely waterproof. It fits well, except it tends to be a bit short at the waist so you may catch a draft (you have to make sure to cinch up the drawstring) other than that I have no complaints. It is a bit pricey but it is top quality gear.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
This is the year I get a WARM coat. I have an EMS and North Face that are good during activity, but I'm pretty cold at rest so I wanted a good, warm coat. Guess I'm looking more for a Parka-style coat. I found this one to be a little too short.
Also, it's pretty poofy in the shoulders. I'm 5'9" and about 210 so I got a large. I guess the extra poof is for warmth, which is fine - maybe I'm being nitpicky. Mainly, just disappointed b/c I really wanted this to work out. But at least the return policy is what it is!
Too bad REI doesn't carry the Parka version of this jacket - then I'd be set! Oh well.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
This jacket performs very well for the uses for which it was intended and at its price point. It is lightweight, fairly streamlined, and somewhat short in length allowing considerable freedom of movement. It is very compatible with climbing harnesses It is also fairly water resistant, but by no means water proof as evidenced by the non-tapped seams.
To those reviewers who downgrade this jacket because it isn't warm enough or water proof enough, let me just say that these aren't flaws in the jacket. Mountain Hardware and other manufacturers offer numerous other down jackets from which you can choose among several higher levels of insulation or degrees of water proofness right up to the extreme. These same manufacturers offer still other down jackets that offer considerably less warmth than the Sub Zero SL. It makes no sense to downgrade this product simply because it is too warm or too cold for your intended use or because of your own inability to choose the right product for your specific needs.
