Sturdy, easy to install on my MTB with disc brakes
I was looking to set up my Ghost Kato 3 with 27.5 wheels as an off-road touring bike. Rather than try to use the cantilever seat bags and handlebar bags, I wanted to use panniers. I read many reviews of this rack as well as the one designed for disc brakes and after looking at how my brakes were designed on the bike, went with the non-disc version. The fit is perfect and it saved a few bucks vs the disc version. I put my wife’s old REI panniers on the bike, loaded them up with 30 lbs of gear and hit the single-track trail at the park near our house. Very secure and the extra weight was barely noticed. We have an overnight trip planned on the New River SP Trail in VA at the end of this month and I’m ready to go with this sturdy rack,
Non-Disk MTX fit my Ghost Kato3 with disk brakes
I have to say that I was disappointed with REI not being able to tell me definitively which cargo rack to use on my 2015 Ghost Kato 3 27.5 MTB. After all, REI was exclusive distributor for Ghost pre-pandemic. They couldn’t even provide dimensions of the Topeak rack. Based on reviews of the disk version of this rack and customer recommendations, I went with the non-disk version and it fits the Kato 3 (with disk brakes) perfectly. Easy install.
Awesome bike rack
Took about an hour to install on my Diamondback bike, but fit up very nicely. You have to bend two metal connectors, but they get a nice curve in them and they look nice - the final configuration is very sturdy. Also got a Topeak bag that slides onto the rack with a positive attachment. Finishing touch was mounting a reflector on the back of the rack. Very good looking and functional. No rattles or wiggles!
Adaptable Bike Rack
I've been thinking about trading in my backpack for a set of panniers for years now and I finally did it. This rear rack is great! My road bike did not have eyelet mounts so I did have to go to Lowes and buy some p-clamps, bolts, and more hex nuts to properly secure the rack. If you find yourself in the same situation here are the sizes of the parts I got: 1/2" lined rubber p-clamps, bolt M5- 0.80 x 20, hex nut M5- 0.80. I used the hex nuts I bought to secure the rack instead of the castle nuts that came in the box. The castle nuts were not tightening down enough for me to keep the rack in place. Once all the nuts are tightened down the rack feels very srcure.
nice rack
I got this rack for my commute to work. I like it because of its compatibility with the Topeak bags, although I don't have one so my review is completely based on just the rack itself. It actually feels pretty light, but still very sturdy. It appears to be compatible with lots of 26" bikes because of the adjustments available to the front of the rack. I don't have the specific Topeak light on the back, but I'm sure folks can make something themselves to put a light on there. I just moved my rear reflector there and continue to use the light on my saddle bag. Another benefit, the piece of metal in the middle of the rack where you slide the Topeak bag also acts as a semi-fender. It catches some of the water and dirt coming off of the back tire. Not all racks are like that. I use a Novara pannier on the rack and it fits nicely on there. I am able to push he pannier far back on the rack so my heels don't hit it. For those considering racks...I am glad I got one for my commute. I almost always wear a backpack when I go biking (road, MTB, or around town), but it was a lot of weight on my back with my clothes and lunch for work. It is very nice to be able to put the weight on the actual bike instead. It is much more comfortable.
Quality & Ease of Install Help Make Up For Price
Very satisfied with quality, fit and paint. Unit installed in about 20 minutes and fit 700C Hybrid perfectly. I looked at the Planet Bike model closely in the store, as most of the reviews stated the lower connections are way to narrow. Ultamately spend the additional 15 dollars for the Topeak and feel it was worth it. Also, the paint quality seems much more durable. The Planet Bike racks were already scratched in the store.
Works Great!
After suffering with a backpack for a few months, I opted for a rack system for commuting to school/work. I use this rack with a matching MTX DXP trunk. I was somewhat nervous upon reading other reviews where people had difficulty installing the rack, but it fit my bike great (I'm a proud owner of a 2009 Specialized Tricross Pro). The fittings were built into my bike, and I didn't have to bend the rails to make it fit so installing it only took a few minutes. The great part about this rack is how it works with the matching trunk from MTX. The trunk slides right on with a satisfying 'click' when it's in place. When I'm riding, it doesn't move around at all. Also, the rack is made of hollow tubing and is surprisingly light. If there's anything that I don't like about it, it's the short list of tail lights that are compatible with it. However, this issue was easily solved when I found the spot for clipping my tail light to the trunk. Also, I've only had the rack for a week and I think one of the mounting points is beginning to squeak. Could be an issue with my fittings, or my installation, but annoying nonetheless. When I'm using the panniers on my trunk, there's not quite enough clearance between my heels and the panniers, so I occasionally hit the bag with my heels.
Excellent paired with Topeak MTX bag
Very sturdy and easy to mount. Used non-disk brake rack with Diamondback Haanjo Metro with disk brakes and it worked out great. When paired with Topeak MTX bag it is a great system. Lock your bike up and slide the bag off and take it with you. Couldn't be happier with it.
Excellent product
I bought this rack to repurpose my old mountain bike to a city bike/grocery hauler since I was retiring and would have more time to do everything by bike. The rack fit my mid-90's Trek perfectly. I didn't time the installation process but it took no longer than just bolting the rack to the bike. A slight bending of the struts extending to the seat stays was needed but this step was addressed in the instructions and anticipated. Once the rack was attached it was very rigid. I have been using the rack with an Ortleib Velo-shopper and couldn't be happier. Somethings in life just work and all the pieces are there - this rack just happened to be one of them!
Solid lil rack
Super simple to install I happen to luck out buying the non-disc specific one with my rear caliper being located lower than most so it fits great only took a few minutes to install and now is solid as a rock!
