Comments about Topeak MTX BeamRack - E-Type, V-Type and A-Type:

I don't normally write reviews but the other reviews written for this product almost scared me away. I'm glad they didn't. After going for it anyway, I am totally happy with this rack (and the Topeak bag). I own a mountain bike and commute to work. I love the quick-release option. It allows me to commute to work and with little effort I'm in the mountains on weekends. They say it slips. All I did was get rid of the extra grease on my seat post and used a little muscle to secure it down. It does not slip on me at all! Let me repeat, it DOESN'T slip! Also I was worried it wouldn't fit my seat post but it truly is a one-size fits all. The shims that come with it are awesome! You should buy the additional guards if you want a regular panier. This rack is awesome for that quick commute to work. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Comments about Topeak MTX BeamRack - E-Type, V-Type and A-Type:

This is a well-designed rack that fits tightly and is easy to install. The individual parts are very high in quality, which is reflected in the total product.

It comes with multiple sizes of shim pieces for securing the unit to a variety of post sizes. It also comes with various adapters for attaching a proprietary taillight. My basic Planet Bike flasher needed to be adapted, but for anyone who's reasonably mechanically inclined, it's no big deal.

A couple of cons - by the nature of its quick release design, it would be easy for someone to steal very quickly while you run into the market, etc. Also, the rubber straps are specialized for this unit and are pretty certain to need replacement sooner rather than later due to their small gauge. There are rails for using standard bungies, though, and if you're using it with a QuickTrack equipped bag, the straps are a non-issue.

Overall, a good, well-designed product. I'm glad I bought it.

Comments about Topeak MTX BeamRack - E-Type, V-Type and A-Type:

I used this rack during my road bike tour (unsupported) accross Cuba in 2005. My friend and I were using the same racks, not a problem to report, we tested it in all kinds of roads during 565 miles of fun. My friend used the attachments and I didn't; I was just trying to save space.
The rack outperformed my expectations after a bad experience with another rack (welds) on a ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
I will use it on my mountain bike soon, and I just bought the attachments.

Comments about Topeak MTX BeamRack - E-Type, V-Type and A-Type:

I originally got this rack for use commuting on fire road too and from UC santa cruz on my mountain bike. I would highly recommend the topeak rack, and bag system to anyone who is commuting. They easily, securely and quickly clip together and I never worried about it on slightly rough trails. It gets the weight off your back, which allows you to ride, sweet, and forget about it. Because there is a slide and clip system it works well for just taking cloths and lunch, or placing books, and running shoes in the fold up panniers. While it does add some weight to your bike, (I now live in chicago and it is very noticeable on my road bike), I still move faster with the weight off my back when I can just think about pushing and not a shifting bag.

Comments about Topeak MTX BeamRack - E-Type, V-Type and A-Type:

I got this rack more or less exclusively to carry one of the Topeak MTX trunks for bike commuting to work. There are several different styles of this rack with different angles. Functionally speaking there is no difference in quality or utility between the different styles. The main difference is what angle do you need to attach to your seat post and clear your tire. The configuration of your frame, seat post and any other seat post accessories will determine which one is right for you. I got the straight post as that fit my bike the best (Cannondale Bad boy ultra).

I went for the clamp on style vs the screw on style because it gave me the flexibility to easily take it on and off. I can put it on for the commute and then when I get home take off and loose the extra weight for recreational riding. I can also easily move it to my mountain bike and use it for running errands and shopping. Keep in mind its weight limit is 30 lbs. If you are doing heavy shopping you need to get one that has struts that attach to your bike frame.

Getting it on and off is easy enough, just tighten or loosen the clamp screw. Its designed to fit thicker tubes. In order to get it on my old mountain bike I had to use a shim from an old rack of mine. It works fine, but keep that in mind if you've got a bike with a thinner seat post.

Once concern I had was if the rack was going to shift around a lot when loaded. I found that if I get it tightened right that's not an issue. It's held the weight of a watermelon and still not shifted. You do have to get it clamped down as much as possible. If you want the lever to fit flush you have to do the adjustments one full rotation at a time.

The rack has some rubber tie downs on it, haven't used them. There is also a mounting kit for putting a back light on the back that looks complicated. For me its not something I would use. When the trunk is on the rack I can clip it to the trunk, when the trunk is off you can see the light mounted on the seat post.

NOTE: If you get a trunk with the side Panniers you will need to get the side panel attachments for this rack.

            Pros
            Easy on, easy off
            Not too heavy

            Cons
Easy to steal (by function of its design)
            Doesn't fit thinner seat posts

It's very unstable, only being mounted to the seat post. I bought it for a Topeak trunk bag, but I can't use the zip-out panniers without dropping another [$] on wheel guards. Worst of all, the clamp is so bulky that my legs rub against it when I ride.Maybe I just have big legs.Either way, I'm returning it and getting something else.

I used this product on my mountain bike hoping it would be used for small bike tours (not a chance unless you go in a straight line with no potholes.)
I was riding on the trails when the rack went into my wheels. It worked well with small weights but as soon as you start loading up in the 10-20 pound range you will need the rack triangulation.
