Comments about First Aid for Dogs - What To Do When Emergencies Happen:

We used this book when our dog ripped her paw pads on cement, and later on ice, when her leg was gouged by a stick (requiring 6 stitches at the vet the next day), when she was hit by an SUV, fracturing her pelvis (it was the evening, and the closest 24 hour vet is 2 hours away), and when my friend's dog fell down her stairs (a full recovery is expected). I have post-it notes on the sections I use the most!

The book is great for figuring out if it is worth driving to the 24 hour vet right away, or if pooch can wait until morning. I would not completely substitute this book for having a vet, but it helps when you need it most.

I recommend getting familiar with the book when you first get it, because when our dog was hurt, it was a little difficult to find the pages I needed (sticky notes DO help!).

PS. Our dog has fully recovered from everything... so far...
