Great price for a great shoe
I have used these snow shoes on both deep powder (with the 4 inch extensions) and regular snow with a slight crust on it and in both situations they worked great. Good traction, good floatation and great stability. The bindings are easy to use after a you get past the learning curve and stay secure though some pretty rough hiking. And you can put either shoe on any foot which makes it a bit easier when trying to put them on in deep snow or steep terrain. No snow shoe even comes close at this price! I can't wait to go back out and strap them on!
Warning: Fragile and Difficult to use
I bought my Denali snowshoes at a gear sale at about half off because they were used a few times as rentals. The 3rd time I used them one of my snowshoes cracked at the top, making the pair now useless. The traction is so poor that I'd step up and my snowshoe would slide back half the step, making it difficult to get anywhere. I am 180lbs and for these to crack so easily makes me never want to buy another MSR product. I contacted the company and sent them a picture of the damage and they won't reply. Bad customer service + bad product =Stay Away!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it
I have the older model with the lace-up bindings, but the design of the decks remain unchanged. What a great product. I have great faith in the rugged, molded design of the Denali's. What I like in particular is how well the decks repel snow when in deep powder. I'm running and jumping though powder while it seems all my friends are doing is being tripped up by they're big, clunky shoes. The Denali's also don't have all those riveted connections that are subject to failure. Solid piece of equipment that will last a lifetime. Great for beginners and advanced alike.
Not Impressed
I have had these snowshoes for this entire season. I am constantly having problems with the back strap coming undone from the side without the clamp on it. It creates a major problem when you're in the backcountry and you step completely out of your shoe. The strap doesn't stay secure and eventually works itself out of the clasp. The three strap system also makes it a bit more cramped trying to get the shoe on especially when it is cold out. I just took them back and ordered a pair of MSR Lightning Ascent 22's which I have used before. For the extra money I would go with them if you are looking for a good all around snowshoe.
Our first snowshoes and we're very pleas
My wife and I bought a pair each. I bought the 4 inch tails for mine as well. Our first use included traversing 24 inch deep virgin powder snow on flat, rolling and some fairly steep up and down slopes. I broke the trail and didn't find it all that arduous. We also ran into virgin snow that had seen sun and melting with a refrozen crust. To complete the variety of conditions we also descended a forest road that had been heavily used by snowmobiles. In places this road was hard crusted, in other where the sun did not shine the snow was loose and powdery. We had no problems on any of the variety of snow conditions. We are very happy with our selection.
Best Snowshoes
I love my MSR Denali snowshoes. They take me anywhere I want to go on the snow confidently. I use the short tails on mine when not on a beaten down trail. Tails mount and remove very easily. I've climbed steep banks of loose and packed snow, traversed meadows, and never had a problem with my Denalis.
Noisy!
The Denali is a decent snowshoe, and REI's price is reasonable. I don't really like the removable tail concept (too fiddly to install on the trail when conditions change), but for some folks I'm sure its fine. I elected not to buy them after renting a pair and slowly going insane from the incredibly loud crunching noise they made. They were noticeably louder than shoes being used by other group members. I eventually ended up with the MSR Ascents, which are much quieter (and considerably more expensive).
Wish I Knew Before
I like the stability I feel in icy and non icy conditions. I like being able to add an additional piece to the shoe for deeper snow or someone with heavier weight. The shoes are difficult to strap in cold weather conditions with gloves, etc. I went to a REI snow shoe clinic located in a forest preserve. I learned about another shoe that has much easier straps to fit into. There were disadvantages about the other shoes, but the ease of being able to put on and take off would have made a difference for me. I still like my shoes. Will need to get used to strapping shoes on and off.
excellent snowshoes!!
Our family of 4 spent a week at Lake Tahoe. We had 4 different types of snowshoes (borrowed, rented and purchased) we are 4 very different sizes. We all fought over who got to wear these snowshoes. they fit all of us. They were effortless to put on and by far the easiest to walk in. I returned the other pair I bought at Rei and bought another pair of these.
This pair has lasted thirteen years
This is my first and probably only pair of snowshoes. I don't use them enough to warrant upgrading, but I have used them in eight or nine of the last thirteen winters. Not a lot, but I used them. I never had foot tangle trouble. No one who's ever tried them has either. All of them knew nothing about snowshoeing. I find the tails to be pretty much necessary for deep snow. The only drawback is that the front of the shoe sinks further than the back. Leaning hard on my heel minimizes it, but it still happens. But, once when I was annoyed because my shoes were sinking six inches into the snow, I took off one shoe to check the depth and sank down to my hip on that side while the other foot was higher than my hip. It was like putting one foot flat on the kitchen table. I wasn't annoyed any more after I finally got the shoe back on. These things are pretty tough. Mine have a heel lift and I've used it a few times with no trouble. They're a little difficult strapping on and taking off. Not terribly but it takes a few minutes. I hear other models are easier. I can live with it. I'd recommend these as a good beginning shoe. Unless you REALLY beat them, they should resell for a decent price.
