Comments about Kelty Chuck Wagon Dog Pack - Medium:
I bought a couple of these recently so can not attest to long term durability however for intial quality, these are the best I've come across. They are not too bulky and unlike most packs that flare out like those packs they put on camels, these are sleek and vest-like so your dogs don't bump into your legs or trees etc. These are extremely easy to put on and go on quickly. Other packs I have used I literally had to paint the buckles in different colors so I knew where to fasten them. These packs take 2 seconds to slip on and secure. It is one piece.I bought a medium sized one for one of my dogs then went back [...] a few days later to get a small one for my other dog. I would definitely recommend these packs. My dogs carry flashlights, bottles of water, cleanup and some grooming supplies, treats, toys, a small bowl, spare leash, you name it. Still plenty of room to spare and well under the weight limit. These rest on their shoulders, not on the back. The packs do not restrict movement of the legs. The dogs can run, go up and down stairs, potty, all of that.As someone mentioned the slack in straps does dangle but you can tie it up with a twist tie or rubber band since you don't need to adjust that very often. The dogs look cool in them and they know that! The bear bells are a nice touch.Take it slow when starting out with back backs. Treat and praise for letting you put the pack on. Practice just wearing the pack before your journey. Make putting on the pack a precursor to fun times and your dog will love to wear it.

Comments about Kelty Chuck Wagon Dog Pack - Medium:
I originally bought this for Link, he's a ~50lb. cattle dog mix, but it kept rotating to one side no matter how I adjusted it even with nothing in the pack, my guess is it just didn't work well with his body type and/or the way he walks.
So it got passed over to Angel, she's a golden mix and approx. the same weight. the pack fits her a lot better but I have two gripes that happened with both dogs: the straps underneath are too long and drag along the ground and the small pad in the front twists around. The straps also come loose from time to time but not overly so.
Neither dog seemed to really notice the pack, and it didn't seem to hinder their movement at all, whether a full speed run, a climb up steep rock, or a leap off small ledges.
We've been hiking mostly in the White Mountains, NH since we got the pack.

the straps come loose when the dogs are running the trail. We fit the dogs then sewed the straps so the would stay tight. We also secure the zippers together so the pockets do not open.
the packs fit well and the handles come in handy. the packs allow the dogs to go under, over and around items as if no pack was on. my dogs even swam through streams with the pack on.

Used this product 3 times while on exteneded hiking trips. My dog (65 lb weim) discovered very early on how to get it off. He didn't mind carrying it but each time he put his head down it slid forward. They need to add a second strap to go behind his chest to secure the pack in place. I will be trying another pack because I can't seem to resolve this issue. We ended up carrying the pack out on our last trip. The straps also loosened while the dog was hiking and had to be adjusted often. It does seem to be made well and has not shown signs of wear (even though it has ended up on the ground many times), however it is now totally useless to us.

I bought a medium for my hiking bud, Cody (50lb Lab mix) and I absolutely LOVE the fact that he can now schelp his own stuff around. I like the fact that it's super easy to put on and pretty durable (Cody has run into just about everything you can find on the trail, trees, rocks...me). The long straps do need to be trimmed & sewed once you fit it, but that's no big deal. Great pack for a great price! Be careful about the sizing though, he's still got a lot of room in the medium. I think the large could prob. fit a pony!

I put this pack on my 55# dog and took him for an overnight hike. We walked through an overgrown section of trail and Odie wandered a bit. when we emerged, his pack was gone! His food and bowl were in his pack so I looked for an hour. No luck. Odie and I had to share my spaghetti for dinner and we both went to bed a bit hungry.

Works well on level ground or any uphill but will slide forward on steep downhills. My dog quickly learned to shuck it off going downhill!

Comments about Kelty Chuck Wagon Dog Pack - Medium:
I believe this pack deserves 4.5 stars, but rounded up to offset what I believe may be adjustment error on a couple reviews.
When I first put the pack on, I got all the same problems listed in reviews, rides to the left even though weight is distributed evenly, falls over his head when going downhill, etc. Then I realized I was trying to hold it in place with the straps, thus they were too tight. The pack shouldn't rest on the dog's shoulders, but right behind them. If you experience these problems loosen the chest straps substantially to get the pack to ride farther back.
A major plus for me with a pack is that Rocky is a different dog now on the trail when wearing his pack. He used to roam around, and on steep hikes, it could be dangerous. He's slid down the mountain numerous times. When he's wearing the pack, he stays on trail and hikes rather than running back and forth.

I have a purebred boxer, about 50# and the MEDIUM fits her well. I'm thinking about cutting the excess straps under her belly, so that she doesn't trip over them, but great quality. She wore it to the beach and dragged it through the sand/water. It dried quickly and practically cleaned itself! She appears to carry herself a bit prouder, as if the pack gives her a purpose.

Comments about Kelty Chuck Wagon Dog Pack - Medium:
My two American Indian Dogs and I are very active. The Kelty Pack has been extremely helpful with regards to carrying extra water, snacks and of course boop bags on our outdoor excursions. The Kelty Pack also holds up to my AIDogs rough play, ripping through the bushes when chasing prey and even salt water and sand. In addition, The Kelty Pack offers good ventilation. The Kelty Pack is a must have for the four-legged family member that likes to work.
