I have frequently used this for backpacking and that is the purpose I am considering here although the issues of size and weight relate to other uses as well.

Positives: It is well made. Edges are sharp (except for the awl which has no edge or point), and keep their edges reasonably well (under the relatively light use that this tool is suitable for). Screw drivers are squarely cut and work (unlike the rounded edges on cheaper tools). Pliers are well made and useful for everything from removing splinters (or porcupine quills!) to bending o ring clips on cotter pins to holding short spoons in boiling water to bending various pieces of gear back into shape. Scissors easily cut mole skin etc.

Negatives: 1. it weighs 6.8 oz. (more than a good large folder such as a Spyderco Endura, or even a midsize fixed blade such as the Benchmade Rant - not counting the sheath). 2. It is thick. Given the weight and size it is uncomfortable to carry in pocket. 3. Several tools are unnecessary, especially if you carry a good regular knife of any kind. For instance, while the saw might conceivably be useful in some emergency (say to cut pine boughs if your air mattress fails), it is too short to be useful in any daily way. A good quality larger folder or fixed blade can do anything it can do (with battoning). If you need to cut wood regularly (e.g., for firewood) you need at least a strong fixed blade for battoning, or a light weight pack saw (such as those by Kershaw, Buck or Gerber, approx. 7 oz., 7-8 inch blades), or even a pack axe such as Kershaw's, (14 oz.) Similarly, the serrated edge blade doesn't really add functionality over a regular sharp blade although I always want to have more than one blade with me incase one breaks (and to keep one clean for first aid uses). Bottle openers and cork screws? Please.

So although it may make sense to take this if it is all you are going to take, most of the tools are not necessary. They are certainly not necessary if you are taking a good size regular knife. In fact since I usually carry either a folder or fixed blade I found that the xe6 was just unnecessary weight. What I am doing now is to carry a regular knife and supplement that with a leatherman juice s2 or squirt ps4, depending on circumstances. The s2 has all the useful tools of the xe6 (same sizes as xe6 ) while loosing most of the unnecessary ones and 2.5 oz. The ps4 is essentially a scaled down version of the s2 and looses almost 5 oz from the xe6. The ps4 is definitely too small to take by itself but nicely complements a real knife. The s2 is a reasonable single carry if you are comfortable with only a single short blade. I prefer it to the ps4 even as a supplement carry when weight is not an issue.

Although this product is loaded with features, it has broken twice under casual use. I bought it for the features and the Leatherman name, as I own an old-style Leatherman tool. However, this just doesn't have the quality of the old Leatherman products. The blades look cheap, dull easily, and as I said, the pressure-spring in the back of the tool has snapped twice. I sent it back the first time and Leatherman replaced it, free of charge, but after breaking again, it's sitting on the table. Too much hassle to package it up and send it back again. [...]

This is the best mutli-tool due to its size, tools included and durability. I have had three of these tools all lost (TSA got one and left other on a job). I use them for everything; I have used them as a carpenter and data/communications installer, mountain biking, camping, auto repair, etc… If the tool were any bigger I wouldn't carry it with me all of the time and any smaller and it would lose functionality.

I have no idea how anyone would break this in normal usage. I have used them for many, many years and am very happy with their durability. The only thing I would improve is the opening of the flat head screwdrivers which have stabbed me in the back of the thumb and broken fingernails many times.

First let me say that I own many Leatherman multi-tools. Most of them are older models that have been retired but they are still great tools. I keep them in various appropriate places, one is always kept in my camera bag, one is always kept in my motorcycle saddle-bag, etc. but this one has been on my belt for many years now. It's the first tool I go to. I don't think you could ask for a better every-day multi-tool from Leatherman. True, it is not as heavy-duty as my Surge or some of the older models but that's not what I need it for. If I need something heavy-duty I will get my Surge, which is never far away, but for all of my day-to-day needs this Leatherman has been the perfect companion for many years. The variety of tools available is perfect, from the scissors and the corkscrew to the saw which could cut through bone to the screwdriver bits. It has everything you need for every day use. I have not had a problem pulling any of the tools out and breaking thumbnails as some of the other reviews have mentioned but I make sure it is lubricated at the pivot points. If I lost it I would cry for a week then buy two more so that if I lost another one I would have a spare.

Looking past the slick feel, the size fits well in my hands and is easy to use. I cannot get over how sharp the blades are. The serated blade makes short work of any cordage. (keep your fingers clear!) Very durable. I have not had a use for them yet, but the straight blade screw drivers are difficult to access.(pull out) My final words: Great Tool.

This is a heavy tool whose materials are very week. Leatherman is trying to cram too many tools into one product by sacrificing quality (durability). For example the corkscrew unwinds, can opener bends, and squeeze the pliers to hard and they bend.....etc.

i love it. I find something to use it for all the time. I work at a camp in the summer, and it's a very outdoorsy camp, a lot of camping and survival, and fishing too. It's great for everything.
