Comments about Coleman Exponent 229 Dual-Fuel Lantern:
Pretty much everything that you would expect from a Coleman - solidly built, well-designed and should be expected to withstand years of hard use. And like all Coleman lanterns, this is definitely best-suited for base camp (even though it's slender enough to fit in an outer pocket of a backpack). Impressively bright light for a single-mantle lantern, and it's also surprisingly efficient, with a 5+ hour burn time on just 8 ounces of fuel. The lantern's ability to burn unleaded gasoline in addition to white gas is a welcome flexibility.
Tip #1: You will find it much easier to light the mantle using a wooden match than trying to use a (shorter) paper match, or even a bic lighter. The longer the match, the easier it'll be.
Tip #2: Use a little paint or nail polish to highlight the lettering and directional arrow on the pump handle, to make it easier to see in dim light.

Comments about Coleman Exponent 229 Dual-Fuel Lantern:
One of the smallest liquid fuel lanterns avaialable, this lantern is small enough to fit in backpacks but perhaps better suited for car camping. Outdoor Research used to make a padded case that fits this lantern well, but it doesn't seem to be available anymore. Lantern is small, lightweight, and fairly easy to light. Small size means that it has less light output than larger gas mantle lanterns.

Comments about Coleman Exponent 229 Dual-Fuel Lantern:
I've had this lantern for many years. Its compact and simple design makes it very easy to pack and use. Good light output for its size. The only downfall is that it needs to be pumped about every hour to keep tank pressure. I've never tried unleaded gas but I'm sure it would work just fine. Good Coleman quality. I mounted a lantern sparker inside the globe for matchless lighting. If needed I can light up in the rain. This lantern works in all weather conditions including extreme cold. Would recommend this lantern to any camper.

Comments about Coleman Exponent 229 Dual-Fuel Lantern:
I jused this lantern for a week hunting in the southern mountains of Norway living til lavvolife. The lantern the only lightsource and it did the job suberbly! No problem lighting up a 10-persons lavvo enough for cooking and social life. Be sure to pack extra mantles, they have a tendence to rupture to fast when lightening. We had weather with temprature as cold as -10 celcius, using a litle bit longre to get the mantle lit. Next time I will pack the lantern in my sleeping bag while out hunting...

Comments about Coleman Exponent 229 Dual-Fuel Lantern:
Despite the advanced of LED lighting, they have not been able to beat the powerful warm output given out by these gas lanterns.
Exponent 229 is the smallest lantern made by Coleman, hence it does not have the long run time of it's bigger brothers. Given the summer daylight are much longer, you only need to light the camp site for 3-4 hours and Exponent is perfect for that job.
The lantern is very hard to adjust. After playing with it for a week, I have finally got the hang of it. The trick is not to set it to full blast, that's way too hot and will ensure each full pump will only last 15 minutes. Set it to medium. However, the knob is very sensitive in the middle position, so you have to be very gentle, just tapping the knob is enough to adjust the flame. Once you got the flame adjusted, each pump will easily last 90 minutes, which is not bad for this little 8 oz tank.

Comments about Coleman Exponent 229 Dual-Fuel Lantern:
Growing up my dad had the older version of this stove, and after he took it back I decided I needed my own. I do notice that like any white fuel system good fuel is important, along with proper filtering, otherwise on and off are your only options. I love this lantern and wouldn't trade it for any other.

Comments about Coleman Exponent 229 Dual-Fuel Lantern:
I car-camped with some people who had a larger green 1-mantle coleman lantern and thought it was handy around the base camp. I couldn't find one of those so I got this one. The big problem is the valve. Despite claims on the box, f I try to adjust the valve for less light output, it flickers and shuts off. So it's full brightness, low runtime, and it gets very hot. I'm returning it.
