Comments about Nalgene Wide-Mouth Cantene - 32 fl. oz.:
I love the idea of a flexible water bottle for travel, because it packs easily. Its design also allows it to stand up when full.
Unfortunately, this bottle suddenly leaked, without any obvious reason - I didn't have the luxury of determining how. Had I not realized it in time, it would have ruined my digital camera which was in my bag at the time.

I bought one of these collapsible bottles for use as Pee bottle while paddling and camping. Everyone who paddles knows that when the urge strikes, it's not always convenient to hit the beach for a bathroom break and sometimes the conditions on the water or shore prevent a break. I keep one of these collapsible bottles folded up and stored behind my kayak seat for handy use. I also take it with me on canoe trips as well. After use, pour, rinse and store for the next need. Also, this works well when camping and the urge comes in the middle of the night and it's raining or too cold leave the comfort of your tent. I clearly marked "Pee Bottle" on mine with a black marker to discourage other use..... I can't comment on its intended use but for my alternative use, it's a life saver.

I got this thinking it would be nice to breakdown the water bottle when its not needed. The hard Nalgenes are not really all that heavy, but space wise I though this would be great.
I have used this in the neighborhood of 6 backpacking trips, and last trip is started to have a heavy leak from the top seam. I repaired it when I got home, but my sleeping bag was nice and wet that evening to sleep in.
I still like the concept, and even bought the 96 oz for at camp use.
So make your own decision, for a primary water carrying source I would not recommend, but if you are looking for a backup bottle, or something it would be nice (going to keep this in my camera bag for the unexpected day hikes).

I was hoping mine wouldn't leak after reading the reviews.. Received mine a couple of days ago and immediately filled it water to test it. Leaks at the bond between the reservoir material and the lid frame (not just a drip, but a stream). I'll have to wait until I'm near an REI store to return it since return shipping will likely cost near the price of this product.

Comments about Nalgene Wide-Mouth Cantene - 32 fl. oz.:
These canteens are great because they weigh almost half as much as a hard-sided Nalgene and they roll up when not in use. But because they're collapsible you need two hands to drink from or pour them, and two hands aren't always available for the job, especially when you're backpacking in wet and muddy conditions and need to hold something in the other hand. Also, it was a little complicated to use my SteriPen with these bottles, as the actual capacity is much larger than 32oz, but the SeriPen can only handle 32oz at a time. So I filled the bottle up to the 32oz line and had to squeeze the bottle to bring the water up to the top, where I could insert the SteriPen and stir away. Still a good weigh saving product.
The sharp, pointy bottom corners were damaging my pack pockets, so I gently rounded the edges with a pair of scissors which eliminated the problem completely.

These fit well in my dogs packs (Wolf Packs). In warmer weather I prefreeze a portion of the water and put them into the packs next to the dog, so my dogs can stay cool. That increases the level of effort that is safe for the dogs in warm weather (but keep an eye on ice remaining and don't fill too much before freezing).
If you use these for long enough, the wear and tear will eventually create a pinhole leak somewhere, so screw the lid on tight after filling and squeeze a bit to pressure test them. If you see drips, it is time for a replacement. We get our money's worth out of them, so I just keep one or two spares around. I also use the 96 oz bladders to carry water in the car to the trailhead (also prefreezing in the summer) so the dogs have cool water in the car too. A plastic bucket works as secondary containment in the car.

I've used these collapsible bottles for years and, as a very weight conscious backpacker/mountaineer, I highly recommend them for their light weight and for their collapsibility when not being used. As mentioned by another reviewer, they don't seem to handle hot water (coffee) very well, it appears to create too much pressure, so I don't put coffee in them anymore. Same with beer, wouldn't recommend it. Even when they do start to leak, after abuse or a lot of use, it was only a tiny drip around the top, so no catastrophe, I just retired the bottle.

I used this on a ten day hike on the AT through the Nantahala Mtns. to have a little extra water at camp along with my regular water bottles and this was perfect. The mouth fit my MSR water filter and had no leaks the entire time. I kept it folded up in my stove kit to protect it from other items in my pack and this worked well. I guess time will tell how durable it is but it worked fine for what I used it for.

I wanted a lightweight water bottle for a thru hike of the John Muir Trail. I tested this bottle on a short weekend backpack prior to my long JMT trip. During my first use there was a very small, slow leak in the bottom of the bag. Nothing huge, but definitely not acceptable.
My local REI does not carry the platypus bottles. I will return this one and order a platypus online.

We used this and a day pack to get to Vegas and Moab with just carry-ons. I considered the Platypus, but opted for the brand I had experience with and a mouth that is more compatible with water pumps. Mission accomplished. This and an MSR dromedary (I've had for years) carried enough water for two in the desert.
Unfortunately, round two in the Appalachians, it started to develop a slow leak at the edge seam. I do not abuse my gear and expect it to hold up for a long time.
I'm going with the Platypus next time. I wish their mouth worked differently, but it's more important the water stays on the inside.
