MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove is rated 4.6875 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good basic stove, be realistic though I use this to boil water or reheat food. I've tried it now in various cold conditions and run a few tests, always with 800 ml/27oz of water in a SnowPeak Titanium solo cookset. Water started at backpack temps, not freezing. Test 1: sheltered, elevation 4200ft (1300m), ambient temp 5C/40F. Boil time: ten minutes Test 2: gusts of wind, elevation 3200ft (1000m), ambient temp -5C/23F, boil time 45 minutes. Test 3: semi-sheltered, elevation 2000ft 600m, ambient temp 8C/46F, boil time 12 minutes. Pros: extremely compact, lightweight, and dead easy to light. Just turn on the gas and hit it with a flame. It flutters in wind but hasn't blown out. I have found it stable using the above Snowpeak pot, but you obviously want to put it on a flat surface. Cons: in the real world it doesn't meet the specs set out on the description here, but if you are realistic about how and where you use it, you can work around that. I like it and would recommend it but something like an MSR International, which I also have, has more grunt in really cold conditions trade off is wieght and mess/hassle). This is great for making tea or soup on a lightweight expedition in temps 0C or above, especially if you can shelter it from wind effectively.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Been using it for 3 years and love it I bought this stove when I went on my first backpacking trip in 2010. It worked great and I continue to use it for backpacking and car camping alike (when car camping I use it primarily for morning coffee). A few notes from reading others' reviews: - Cons tend to be related to stability. I can see how if you're trying to balance a bigger pot on it or something requiring a lot of stirring, or if you're cooking on an uneven surface, that you might have issues. But I use it with GSI cookware and have had no problems. It's especially nice with the GSI tea kettle. - I can't imagine how people find it difficult to light. In my experience it's incredibly easy to light. Maybe they got a lemon. - Temperature control is just fine, in my opinion. The fuel canisters are slightly awkwardly shaped for packing but they are easy to screw onto the stove and I like that there is no residual smell with the gas canisters. The limitation I am running into now is when going to a secluded place (Kauai) that may not have this particular canister (since you can't fly with fuel canisters), I might have to find something else to use. All in all, it's a tiny lightweight stove that performs very well for most situations and 3 years later I'm still happy with my purchase!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well as a stove. Overall: Using the Pocket Rocket as a stove works fine. It has no bells and whistles. But, for a Light but not ULTRA light setup, it works pretty well. Though be careful with heavy loads (More than 1 liter of water), trying to stir contents while using it, or using it on not perfectly flat surfaces, as this stove isn't terribly stable. Also, it isn't great for smaller pots, or for that matter larger ones, because of the awkwardly angled pot stands. More Specifically: Honestly when I first opened it up, I thought it was bent. The arms that make up the pot stand are very difficult to balance a pot on. When the pot is placed on this stove, there are only 3 very small points of contact, and it seems uneasy. It is also very tall, which doesn't help things in the stability department. Save your time and trip, and buy a different stove.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little powerhouse! Myself and others are ALWAYS blown away by this little stove! Boils water quick for a hot meal anywhere or anytime. I've taken it backpacking, fishing, biking, trail riding, school, work even to the racetrack! Always get oooh's and ahhh's and "where and how much?" Fuel goes a long way and the unit cools down quickly. Combined with my GSI duo cookware set I have yet to be disappointed. I'm seeing some people have commented on instability, fear not! As long as you possess a room temperature IQ I'm sure you find a flat piece of real estate upon which to cook. Bang for the buck? This little guy is worth it's weight in gold!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use I did have trouble lighting this initially, but I realized that I didn't have the canister screwed on tight enough. It screws on very tightly

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love This Stove I used this stove while thru-hiking the AT and I loved this stove. It is simple to use and I never had to clean or fix it while hiking for 5 months straight. This is the stove that many thru-hikers switched to or used from the beginning. The only con I could think of about this stove is that it could be slightly lighter by 1/2 ounce like the MicroRocket but you would end up losing some stability and pay $20 more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, Light, Durable Product! BUY Used for an AT thru-hike (GA->ME) The 8oz fuel can lasts me 19 days making breakfast (oatmeal, coffee) and dinner (rice side). or about 35+ days making just dinner. Great stove. Your stupid if your using something other than this for backpacking or most camping...except for MAYBE some types of alcohol stoves or small twig fires. The weight is slightly (2-4oz?)more than an alcohol stove (look at weight/fuel consumption over time) but will make your life SO mush easier when all you want to do is eat and go to sleep. It cooks a pot of water in like 2 minutes, an alcohol stove takes about 12. and you can simmer with this! its SO much nicer even though it weighs just a little bit more. Very worth it. And sturdy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Backpacking I have had this stove for 3 years and I believe it is still a great one, even after the newer styles have come out. Its really small and mine came with a hard case to keep it from getting broken while hiking. I know some people say it is unstable and I have noticed that a little bit, BUT only when I don't have it on level ground. Keep it level and it is a great stove for anyone. Don't tip it sideways flames get REALLY BIG, I know from experience.
