Comments about Brunton Eclipse 8099 Compass:
I use this compass all the time, both for work and recreation. Declination is easy to set, circle in circle north is fast and intuitive, reference cards fit between base of compass and base cover and have lots of useful information on them. Great for sighting and back-sighting when following a bearing.

Comments about Brunton Eclipse 8099 Compass:
I bought this compass locally about 2 1/2 years ago to do search and rescue work. Since then, I have used it, not only for that, but also for extended trips along the AT and other closer to home less known trails. On several occaisions I would get disoriented as to where I was and where I should be and with the use of this compass I was able to not only find my way to where I should have been, but also found mistakes on the maps and trail signs. I have also used the reference cards which are included for guides on angles and grades of slopes in mountainous and hilled terrain and such. EXTREMELY accurate even when abused. (intentional abuse not recomended)

Comments about Brunton Eclipse 8099 Compass:
This is a great compass. Very accurate and easy to use. The declination mechanism is very nice and easy to adjust. The manual with the compass requires close reading, but is good. I have used compasses in everything from combat conditions to rescue work and this is, definitely, one of the best designs around. Just bought it, so can't comment on how it does in truly wet weather or in truly extreme conditions. A little difficult to take readings off the sight cover and have to take readings directly off the azimuth ring. However, this may be due more to my poor eyesight than a defect in the design of the compass. A great compass, just don't know how durable it would be in truly extreme conditions.

Comments about Brunton Eclipse 8099 Compass:
This is an excellent compass but it did take me some time working with it. I use a compass all the time in SAR and rely on them over GPS which take batteries and are not always reliable. Mine has a large bubble, which is not great but it still works. Declination is easy to use which is important when navigating over long distances. Probably not a good choice for your first compass but an excellent choice if you are familiar with using one.

Comments about Brunton Eclipse 8099 Compass:
I always like to have a compass with me. I have actively used everything from a simple starter compasss to a military compass. This is one of the best. Intuitive, easy to read, nice feel, and great accuracy. I recently used it on a map and compass course and had to correct the course facilitator because his degree readings were off which he agreed needed correction. The additional information cards are great to have for reference. After using this compass, it is definitely my compass of choice.
