The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern Ready Kit - Aluminum:
One of the things I'm surprised other reviewers have not mentioned (and something you'll never get from an LED) is the candle lantern is the king of condensation repellants! I have taken this lantern on every camping and backpacking trip I've been on for at least 25 years, whether my mode of transportation was a motorcycle, bicycle, car, bus, foot or bush plane. On a day that you've spent slogging through rain-soaked trails then set up your tent in the rain and crawl in to take off your wet clothes, you would like something to give you relief from all that moisture. While this lantern isn't a 25 cent dryer at a laundromat, it will dry out - in a few hours, whatever wet clothing you've layed out or hung up to dry in your tent. Some mornings, I'd give my kingdom for a pair of dry socks, but I don't need to because my candle lantern has provided them for me. No, this lantern won't give off enough light to finish your needlepoint. Yes, it is heavier than a headlamp. But to me, it is indispensible.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern Ready Kit - Aluminum:
This candle lantern is all that one can reasonably expect from a single candle. It's spring-loaded design is fantastic in that it eliminates the need to adjust the candle until a replacement is needed. This set comes with three replacement candles and a carrying bag, all of which met or exceeded my expectations.
I have found that this candle can take some time to get used to. Unscrewing the bottom and lowering out the candle is the best way I've found for blowing it out. This requires a bit of skill as it'll be dark when you blow it out. Most people have an LED light of some sort around so it may be advisable to switch it on for the minute it takes to do this. The wax may splatter onto the inside of the glass if you blow it out from the top and there's a risk of burning yourself if you get to close to the top.
I found that this candle lantern was able to keep a Mountain 3 tent warm and also is small enough to keep it out of the way. I'd also recommend that you scope out some of the accessories, as they can be quite useful. There's a side reflector that will focus the light toward a certain direction. This comes in very handy when walking through the woods at night holding it by the chain.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern Ready Kit - Aluminum:
Some commenters have complained that this lantern "gets hot" and "spills wax." Well, those folks obviously don't want a candle lantern and a tent -- they're probably better-suited for a Honda generator and a plug-in fishnet-stocking lamp (like in that Christmas-Story movie). This is an awesome little device that will give you enormous dividends on both your cash and your pack-weight expenditures. It's just awesome and you will use it both at home and in the field. If you can't figure out how to light/hang/extinguish it without damaging it or yourself, you really should stay on the couch and warm yourself by the glow of your TV. Get one... seriously.

This has been a great light source for my wife and I. We can play cards at night in the tent with it and it is very light to pack in. Burns for hours with no hassles.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern Ready Kit - Aluminum:
The lamp has a cute, compact design. it gives off a decent amount of light, and the candles can burn overnight, effectively make it a nightlight if you have to.
Metal+flame should immediately give you the expectation that it'll burn hotter than anything on batteries. But it's easy to forget this fact as you're going to bed and blow out the flame, especially in cramped quarters.
Another thing to remember: if you bump into the lamp before the wax cools, it may splash against the inside of the glass guard. This could be fairly irritating after repeated uses as the wax will leave streaking.
Bottom line: it's light, compact, and even with a few spare candles weighs less than my lantern. It burns for quite a long time. However, when weight is not a problem, i bring a battery lantern because it's less messy, and i don't burn myself in a 1.5 person tent.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern Ready Kit - Aluminum:
Great for personal light. I got this in the mail and had to light it even though I was in my living room with electricity...I was a skeptic at first because it is a candle. The candles produce very little wax that stayed around the wick (no dripping) and it burned all day in front of a box fan on high. This candle lantern eraned a spot in my backpack on my next hiking/camping trip.

Lantern is very well constructed, easy to light and collapses to a compact size that protects the glove while traveling. Design is excellent. Large candles provide good burn time.
I use the lantern while hiking and for motorcycle camping.

I have owned one of these lights for 15 years. It's low tech and works every time at any altitude. Compacts nicely when not in use. The lantern puts out enough light a to see what you need. You need to be really close to the light if you want to use it for reading. The top does get hot. I wouldn't touch the top after it has been burning for a while.

Saw these and thought I'd give it a try just for a light source in the tent. I brought it along for a weekend hiking trip up the lower Hermosa, CO trail area. Set up was easy...just extend the top, push glass down, light the candle, raise the glass back up and you're done. I lit it after the tent was up at about 4:00pm and blew it out at about 9:00pm. Still plenty of candle left. Provides adequate light to see what you're doing in the tent before bed. I did not personally find that it affected the internal tent temperature at all. My thermometer showed 15 degrees both inside and out at one point. Overall it is a neat little thing to bring and was only 8 oz with one candle and fleece storage sack. Gave it 4 stars because it wouldn't collapse all the way back down due to wax build up, but it wasn't a big deal.
