Comments about Victorinox Minichamp Swiss Army Knife:

One of the better small/pocket multitools, for sure. I already carry around a full size Leatherman Charge TTi everyday, so I was looking for something more focused on, say, trimming my nails and peeling an orange, than, you know, building a civilization. In that regard, the MiniChamp is quite nice. You can see the list of tools here, and they all work as expected (and it's very well made, with the typical Victorinox quality control) so I will focus on a few very minor design quibbles I have. This would've been five stars but I had to knock one off for the following reasons:

    1) There is a separate ruler/flathead screwdriver and nailfile. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see how these could have been combined into one tool.

    2) You get two very similar blades. I'd rather have just one, that is a little bigger (the size of the nailfile.)

    3) Cuticle pusher? Seriously? When will I use this ever?

    4) The built in pen, while extremely handy in a bind, is not the highest quality pen. It seems like they easily could've made this a bit better.

Anyway, the short version is, some tools could be combined/removed, which then could allow the tool to be smaller, or add additional tools in their place (reamer? can opener?)

But don't get me wrong, these are minor concerns. For a tiny but still functional tool to keep on your keychain, this is one of the best. I was eyeing the Leatherman Style CS but I went with this - partly because I like the classic styling!

I should also add a bit about the steel it's made of. Victorinox uses a proprietary stainless steel that is a) VERY stainless, and polished to a mirror finish, b) has lots of ductile strength (ie it will tend to bend rather than break. it is not brittle) but the trade off is that c) your blades will not hold their edge as long, and will require sharpening fairly often. Higher ductile strength = "softer" steel = poorer edge retention. Some people like this, some don't. It's definitely better for the casual user, as maintenance is much easier - the soft steel is also easier to sharpen, and it's very good corrosion/rust resistance lends itself to the non-knife-nut type who just tosses it in their bag and forgets about it. Like I said though, I use this to supplement my full size Leatherman, so if I really need a serious blade I'd just use that anyway.

All in all, a great tool. Worth a look if you're checking out stuff in this category! I wouldn't recommend it for camping/backpacking/climbing/etc (for that I'd go with something that has a locking blade in the 2.5-3.5 inch range) but for light use at home, in the office, or on a picnic, it works great.

Comments about Victorinox Minichamp Swiss Army Knife:

This is a great, all-around pocket knife that I've owned for about three years. Of the many Victorinox knives I've owned, from the smallest to the largest, I still keep the Swiss Champ in my computer/commuter pack, but this smaller Champ is by far the best one I've owned. Not because it can do everything, but because it has a good suite of tools and functionality in a small package. It's the one that I'm most likely to have with me all the time.

The small Philips is great for computers and around the office and the ball-point pen is useful in a pinch, though one wouldn't write more than a few sentences with it. One of the tools not listed is a cuticle-pusher. This is NOT a knife that I'd use in the woods or camping, but for a tag-along in a pair of slacks, it's perfect.

Living in a pocket it can get dirty and linty, but that's easily remedied with some warm, soapy water and a toothbrush.
