The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Rated5out of5byBoubonManfromReliableTen years... Still working. I recently used it on the trail in freezing temps. Two other people in my group had UV steripens. Those did't work, so I filtered THEIR water too. Sometimes simple is better. I trust this.

Rated5out of5byfloraflojafromJust replaced cartridge after 15 years!I love this filter and this company! I bought my Sweetwater filter 15 years ago and used it a bunch in my 20s. It went into the closet the past 10 years (grad school followed by a baby) and I just was able to buy a replacement cartridge that fits the model I bought 15 years go and now it works like new!
Unfortunately the pin that connects the pump handle to the filter just broke. But I called up Cascade Designs and got a hold of someone immediately who said he would ship out a new pin to me for free.
I am a fan.

Rated5out of5bysleflerfromBest pump I've ownedTo all those who have trouble with silt: coffee filters! I have used this in some of the siltiest waters in the Southwest (Paria Canyon for example) and have never had a problem. By wrapping a disposable coffee filter around the inlet, you can filter out most of the very fine sand. This filter has served me well for 4+ years despite pumping from some very questionable water sources.

Rated5out of5byEchoNovemberfromGreat filter!I bought one of these used, and I have never regretted the decision. After reading how easily the Katadyn systems break, and how the parts are non-replaceable, I decided to go with the MSR Sweetwater. All of the parts, including the handle, can be replaced.
When I got my used one, it had a broken main o-ring, and I was leaving on a week long camping trip, with a few all day hikes, in a week. I called MSR, asked about a replacement o-ring and the cost, and they said they would ship me one free. The guy on the phone actually put it an envelope and mailed it himself. I got the o-ring two days before my trip.
I used this to fill two hydration packs multiple times each, from multiple water sources. One of the water sources was a little on the tannic side, due to a lot of forest run off up river. It still filtered out some (not all) of the taste. I had a bit of trouble getting it going at first, until I checked my intake hose and realized that I had positioned the float poorly and it was sticking out of the water slightly. After a quick fix I refilled two 3-liter Camelbaks in a few minutes. It was simple and easy to use, and did not take much effort. I didn't opt for the silt stopper the first time around. I used three unbleached coffee filters rubber banded around the intake as a temporary measure. Any more than three and it was too hard to pump. Even with the three coffee filters restricting the flow, it was easy to pump. I was surprised at how fast it pumps!
It was easy to clean, and I plan on buying a second one as a backup for upcoming backpacking trips where I don't have a base camp with clean water on tap. I would recommend this filter to anyone. It has hose holders built into the handle to keep it organized in its bag, too. Overall, a really good buy!

Rated1out of5byHooKooDooKufromWhat has MSR Done?I too originally purchased my 1st SweetWater filter prior to MSR buying the company that originally made it. That filter has worked flawlessly for years.
It was time to replace the filter element, and I liked some of the new features MSR has added over the years (color coded tubes, bladder adapter, etc). So rather than buying the individual pieces, I opted to spend a few bucks more and get a whole new unit.
Initially, my only complaint with the new unit was that the screen prefilter is now plastic and has a tendency to try to float. But I was able to swap that with the metal prefilter from my old unit.
But then, on my third camping trip since purchasing the new filter, the pump failed to prime if the SiltStopper prefilter was in place. Once I was home, then found where the filter element appeared to be damaged. I'm not sure if the two are related (one caused the other or what). But I've included a picture of the inside of the apparently defective filter element (which should be smooth and round).

Rated4out of5bywildbluelifefromReliable and easy to useThis water filter works great as an integral part of my backpacking gear. It is lightweight, reliable, and easy to maintain. I wish they had thought of a way to keep the tubes for the filtered and unfilterd water separate after filtering. However, I've worked out a system for myself using separate ditty bags for the tubes, and I'd definitely buy the product again because it is simple to use.
