Comments about Reliance Desert Patrol - 3 gal.:
Long story short, got good clean well water at home, not so good at the office in town. Big enough to haul a reasonable amount of water. Small enough to fill a nalgene bottle or my do it all double walled snowpeak cup.
A note to the leaking, it's not that bad, just a dribble at first. It just needs time for the plastic nozzle to seat/reform when it gets flipped over.
Mine are six years old and still look good. I do use all of them regularly, they have seen many miles in a truck bed. Oh yeah, no plastic taste, guess the bpa free works.

I WENT THRU 7 OF THESE TO FIND 2 THAT WERE GOOD.
mOST OF THEM LEAKED AI THE AIR INLET OR AT THE SEAM WHERE THE PLASTIC SHOULD HAVE BEEN FUSED BETWEEN THE 2 HALVES. POOR QUALITY OR A BAD BATCH EITHER WAY NO GOOD FOR YOU OR ME TO HAVE THEM LEAKING.

Comments about Reliance Desert Patrol - 3 gal.:
As others have mentioned, this container WILL leak profusely from the cap as packaged. I moved the O-ring from the original location and moved it between the spout and cap cover (see pics). This placed even pressure on the O-ring and stopped the leaking from the cap. The pressure release valve (if that's what it is) still leaks a bit. The container is relatively easy to carry and the short height allow easy fills.

Comments about Reliance Desert Patrol - 3 gal.:
It leaks when it poured from around the cap and it leaks if it falls on its side when it's sealed for transport. C'mon that's not good in a water container. Maybe it needs/was missing a gasket.

Comments about Reliance Desert Patrol - 3 gal.:
As others have noted this container leaks. I tipped it on its side and it quickly spilled all over the place. This is due to the finicky o-ring installed on the spout of the nozzle that is bound to break down over time and/or get lost. Really awful design and completely unreliable. It was also pointed out in other reviews that the vent plug isn't very reliable and certainly isn't confidence inspiring. How a product that so readily leaks can have the word "Reliance" associated with it is beyond me. REI shouldn't even carry such a product in my opinion. I would rather have only more expensive, quality, options available to me than this relatively useless product. Otherwise why not just shop at [evil?] [...]?I'm very annoyed and dissatisfied and obviously returned it.

Comments about Reliance Desert Patrol - 3 gal.:
I love the form factor of this product, it fits upright in my SUV's front passenger seat well while leaving room for someone to still sit there, or cramming into the back without packing inconvenience. The plastic is pretty sturdy for what it is. The opening is big enough to pour ice in easily.
The negative here is the cap/spout; I wish Reliance had spent the extra 2 dollars to use the same spout/cap that they put onto their 5 gal "AquaPak". The top lid piece of the spout on this 3gal model comes off way too easily when opening it up to pour, and it usually ends up caked in grime. I also found it was easy to screw the cap in with the threads not aligned properly, which I suspect is the root case for the big leaking problems that I see other reviewers complaining about here.
If you want a can that does not seep at all when it tips over or will hold it up in harsh environments, go get a military grade can instead; this thing is a consumer grade item. You get what you pay for.

Recommended by REI staff because she was sensitive to taste, and she was right, this container doesn't add any taste to the water and doesn't fall apart like the collapsible water resevoirs. I was using it to travel cross country, it's surprisingly small for its capacity and packs into the small spaces of a trunk or trailer. It stands up well even in uneven ground, which was great for using a gravity filter. I wasn't storing it upside down, but never noticed any leaks, even when it would get nocked over, and the lid cover works well for keeping sand and gunk out of the water as you open and close it.

Comments about Reliance Desert Patrol - 3 gal.:
I bought 20 of these without reading the reviews. Mistake#1. I gave many of them to friends with my endorsement. Mistake#2. The lid/washer system is badly engineered and no matter how carefully the lid is tightened, the unit leaks if it tips over. I haven't returned any, but have endured numerous complaints and my credibility has decreased. [I also thought I read in the specs where these are UV protected, but one of the reviews I just read said NO.] [...] {My friends and I primarily use these on pack trips ...so they are loaded on mules for 6 to 8 hours.)

Comments about Reliance Desert Patrol - 3 gal.:
On the positive side, the size and shape is perfect. Easy to fit into a loaded vehicle, the capacity is large enough to be meaningful but small enough to allow easy carrying over reasonable distances (one in each hand for balance).
On the negative, these look like Jerry/Jeep cans, but aren't. If you were to strap these onto the exterior of a vehicle and allow extended exposure to sunlight, the material will become brittle and the container will fail within a relatively short time frame (a week or a little more?). It is key, therefore, that these be stored out of direct sunlight.

Lid leaks. Returned. Lid leaks on number two Third time might work but I'll never know. Have been with REI since there was only one store in Seattle. This is the worst product I have ever purchased and the the first thing I have ever had to return.
