Both gold and black
I bought all REI had on hand at the Baybook outlet. The local fire fighters needed 8's for recovery after the eruption of the volcano Fuego in Guatemala. The fire fighters knew they were a strong, dependable product. They were very happy.
Always good!
I’ve been using the Super 8 for guiding canyons and personal use, for a good 16 years now. Put them through it and they always show up as a great, reliable product. I’ll probably continue using them for as long as they’re made or as long as I last!
Gets the job done
Needed a device for single strand rappels for canyoneering and this is just what I needed! Great as is for short rappels into water, but needed more friction for long rappels so I also used a hollow block.
My Go To Rappel Device
I like this rappel device so much I bought both the Black and the Yellow color. It is just hard to beat the value of Black Diamond equipment (especially their outlet and sale items).
Reliable
For many years I have depended on figure 8 devices for abseiling/rappelling. They are not my go to device any more. But I alway have one as a backup. I like the shape of the Black Diamond Super 8 because it prevents the hitching that may occur during a bounce without the need of horns or wings, they are durable however the finishing paint always goes on the first rappel at the friction point, even it if is only like 15ft.
Very solid produst
My rope slides very easily through the device. It makes me look forward to belaying.
Simple and easy
Picked up an eight as a backup rappel device for canyon adventures. Hard to go wrong with the classics.
Can't beat a classic
i bought a few of these 3 years back. after a few dozen weekend warrior repelling trips. buying another because the paint and metal is starting to wear to the point of making my friends nervous. Super good product for a great price, just be aware that if you drop it from higher than your hip on a hard surface it needs to be thrown out.
Ski patrol go-to figure 8
I have been using these for years and they are perfect. It will be training season soon for Mt Hood Ski Patrol and the BD Super 8 is one of the best tools we can offer our patrollers to have in their chairlift evacuation kit in case we need to get guests out of chairs. ATC and belay devices are all good, but the universal nature of the Super 8 makes it our go-to belay device.
Old ways never die!
Fantastic super 8 device, i love being able to run through the knots in 2 rope raps without removing the device like more complicated devices. I find myself using this 100% of the time to rap because its very smooth, very light, and 100% dependable. Old fashioned, but i trust my life to this over a grigri with moving parts :)
