Comments about Black Diamond ATC Belay Device:
Very good for a belay device compared to a figure 8; However, I only weight 135 and I have to pull the rope through it when I am repelling. I like to make quick descents and can not do so with this. When I first leave a ledge it is hard to go down. I will use figure 8's from now on for repelling as I can make it down a 100' cliff in one or two leaps with one.
Service and delivery comments:
Picked up from REI near Las Vegas. The staff was very nice and helpfull

Comments about Black Diamond ATC Belay Device:
This should be every climber's first belay device. Whether top-rope belaying, lead belaying, or rappeling, this is a versatile belay device. It's also cheap and light. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is its inability to belay from the top (with the climber below the belayer) and the fact that you really have to pull on the break end of the rope when a heavy climber is taking to figure out a sequence.

Comments about Black Diamond ATC Belay Device:
First-time used a few days ago on a top-rope repelling run at Devil's Lake State Park. It was about 36 degrees, snow mixed with rain. Used a dry-rope 10.5mm single.
The device works very well. Simple to use, and allows for easy rope control with a single hand.

Comments about Black Diamond ATC Belay Device:
The ATC has great friction as compared to the Petzl Reverso, it is easy to control the belay and rappel speeds. It is a little difficult to get 11mm rope through the opening. Be careful with dropping the ATC. I dropped mine and it made a few nicks in the side and bottom that had sharp edges and I had to file them with a hand file so it wouldn't cut my hand or damage the rope, other than that I have had one for more than two years and it has worked great.

Comments about Black Diamond ATC Belay Device:
Numerous attempts to improve upon ATC resulted in devices that are bulkier, usually heavier, and often optimized for one task at the expense of others.
ATC does not work in "autoblock" mode - but then, no lightweight belay device does it well and problem-free enough for autoblock functionality to be of practical value. Unless you are climbing with a single skinny sub-9.5 mm rope, ATC is probably the most practical choice.

Comments about Black Diamond ATC Belay Device:
This is the classic ATC. I love it for lead belay or belaying light climbers. Feeds line quickly, and can be used as a rappel device. The cons: its not great for multi-pitch, and it takes some strength to keep it locked for heavy climbers.
Comments about Black Diamond ATC Belay Device:
I like the simplicity of this device. I prefer this version over the one with teeth because it feeds and rappells more smoothly.

Comments about Black Diamond ATC Belay Device:
Basic design that is tried and true. Good general use belay device - simple, no frills, lightweight.
No autolocking feature for longclimbs, but it doesn't detract from the overall value.
