Black Widow Spider Bite
I go into rattlesnake country occasionally, but have never been bitten. Shortly after purchasing this snakebite kit, however, my wife was bitten by a black widow spider hiding in the firewood we use in winter. The bite wound was painful and started swelling immediately, but I got the extractor out and onto the swollen site ASAP-within a few minutes. It worked! Within an hour the swelling diminished and my wife now carries one of these on all wilderness outings-even above treeline where rattlers are rare. This extractor is an essential part of our first aid kit, and you will find it useful for a lot more than rattlesnake bites.
It works!
Bought this a few weeks ago after my wife was stung by yellow jackets. Growing up in Florida, my parents had something similar (but not the same) and REI was the only place that seemed to have this tool. Her swelling / rash got worse after a few days, and we decided to try this. 8-12H after we used the extractor, her rash was greatly diminished, and the soreness was gone. I've also used this myself on mosquito bites, and it seems to remove / reduce the itch greatly. We did try to use it on a day old spider bite, and it didn't seem to work, but they tell you in the instructions its hit or miss with spider bites.
The Best little tool
I was a Red Cross First Aid instructor from 1968 until about 2003 teaching everything from standard first aid to Emergency Medical Response. I discovered this little item in the '70s and am never without one, and always demonstrated it in my classes. I also used them many times on hikes, backpacks, overseas travel, during my 3 1/2 years in the Peace Corps. There is nothing as good for stings, bites (except snakes), and abscesses. Get it, have it, use it.
Buy this especially if you have kids.
Last weekend my 12 year old son had a bite or sting on his arm that looked like it was turning into a staph infection. I planned to take him to the doctor the following Monday. The area around the bite became very sensitive, swollen, and painful. He found the Extractor First Aid kit in the cabinet and used it on the wound to drain the infection. It worked great. The doctor was also impressed. The only problem was that my son didn't read the instructions and when he was finished using it, he tried to sterilize it by running it under hot water. The instructions say not to get the applicator wet, just the suction cup. It stopped working the next day. I am purchasing a new one now. I'm thankful that my son thought to try the Extractor. Staph infections can be very dangerous.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
I used this kit 3 weeks later after having a wood tick bite that would not heal, as my 11 year old great great nephew would say "my bad". This unit sucked all the infected junk left behind by that tick and the bite healed just fine. Next time it gets used before the tick hits the ground. This unit will always be with my first aid supplies. Don't leave home without it.
Everyone should have one
Great product. I actually used it on a snake bite on my dog, and could see the venom coming out of the bite. Works well for fire ant bites, and will bring some splinters up where you can grab them. Mine stays my pack and goes everywhere with me.
Great for bites and stings
This thing works great for bites and stings. Keep in mind though that it is virtually ineffective on snakebites. Venom travels very quick through the blood stream and you will not be able to effectively treat a snake bite with this or any other kit. A compress is the best way for treatment of a snake bite. I would suggest you do some research on snakebites. That being said, I didn't buy this kit for snake bites. As far as the tip cracking, I made the same mistake the first time I used one. The plastic cones are tapered meaning that the forces you put on the junction are amplified resulting on breakage. Just a simple, seating push and you are set. No need to shove it, force it, or twist it in place. It's plastic. Plastic is fragile. Great product if used correctly and I have several. I keep one in both vehicles, every pack, and one at home.
An awesome gadget!
I have had one of these for many, many years, and have used it for everything from spider and bee stings to splinters, sea urchin spines, and even an inflamed tooth infection. It works great, and can alleviate a lot of discomfort and in some cases could save your life. I would not go camping, scuba diving or hiking without it.
Amazing for insect bites - not Snakes
I have had this for 2+ years, and have used it mostly on mosquito bites on myself, my wife and my kids. We lovingly joke that I can trade your mosquito bite for a hickey, and everyone agrees to it. It quickly takes the itch out of mosquito bites. As others have mentioned, it is a very bad idea to use it on snake bites, but it is worth the money on everything else My sister just broke one of my suction cups, so I am replacing it.
You only think you don't need this kit
I have used this kit twice in 3 months, both times on feet. Just the other day, a wasp stung me on my toe. Holy moly, did that hurt! I limped to my bedroom, grabbed the extractor kit, and plunged the venom out. I had to use it twice within minutes, then applied the sting relief pad that comes in the kit. It really, truly worked. Within minutes, I was back outside doing yard work, only this time in boots, not sandals.
