Best Purchase in a While
Had to process a lot of wood for a winter backpacking trip in the rain and snow. Had to decide between the trusty old hatchet and picking up a saw. so glad i went with the saw. made getting through the 5-8 inch wide branches a breeze. much less dangerous than swinging a hatchet while cold, wet and tired. a must have!! i will never backpack or camp without it.
Performed Beyond Expectations
I decided to buy the 15 inch Sven Folding Saw to address one of the worse parts of backcounty camping for me: gathering firewood. After using it for five nights in Wind River Range during Aug. 8-14, 2015, I can say that it performed well beyond my expectations. You just need to be patient and let the saw do the work. One interesting note: In response to reading another review that cautioned against losing the wing nut while out in the woods, I emailed the Sven Saw folks to find out the size of the wing nut that I would need to buy. The owner actually replied and even offered to send an extra wing nut (Steel Wingnut size 5/16 – 18). I ended up going to a local store. I wish I had bought this saw years ago.
A must for all backcountry pyromaniacs
My friends and I enjoy relaxing by a good backcountry campfire after a long day of hiking. The problem before this saw was, we had to keep feeding small sticks into our fires in order to keep them burning. This is not very relaxing. I added the Sven saw to my backpacking arsenal this year to remedy the situation and I could not be happier. The saw packs rather small and assembles in under 30 seconds once you get the hang of it. The handle location looks dangerous--until you begin to use it and realize how perfectly balanced it is. This saw cuts through 5" thick logs in a snap. We'll never have a wimpy backcountry campfire again.
Priceless camping tool.
I bought the Sven Saw knowing that I would need something to cut firewood on family outings. A few things to consider, tighten, but not completely, the little nut at the end of the fixed position before you leave on your trip. Just enough to allow it to swivel. You will need a wrench and a screwdriver, items that you might not have available in the wild. Also a washer at the end of the screw mount just slightly larger that the outer dimension of the frame. This is for added integrity on the frame itself for when you stow it. Make sure you test it out with these small mods before leaving on your next outing. The Sven Saw is worth its weight in gold.
Excellent camp saw
Bought one of these for my brother quite a few years ago and just recently picked one up for myself. Took it on a weekend camping trip and used it to make short work of our found firewood! Perhaps not the lightest tool around, but lighter than a hatchet, and far less dangerous when you're getting tired (no errant swings to sever your leg or something). Folds up nice, neat, and safe, and, from what my brother and others have said, remains sharp for quite a long time, even with minor rust spots along the blade. The Sven Saw is (relatively) light and reliable and I'm not sure why I waited so long to buy my own.
Best Saw Out There
This saw rocks, I bought it 3 years ago used it on 3 trips and the same blade is still rocking and sharp. I go with 10 guys each year in late October so a big warm fire at night is welcomed. Another hiker had the Gerber Folding Saw and the Sven saw made him say he should have left his at home. If you can afford the extra ounces in your pack, carry this saw with you and you will be happy you did.
Sawesome!
I've used this saw for 3 years on countless camping, motorcycle, backpacking and Jeep trips. So much more efficient than a hand axe for cutting slightly larger branches into firewood. Light enough and easily pack able for a multi-night backpacking trip and sturdy enough to clear fallen branches off a jeep trail. I am almost never without this saw and its become an essential piece of my kit. Just don't lose the wing nut that holds it together or it will be like trying to saw with a wet noodle. Awesome saw. Get it.
Same great quality as my first one!
I bought my first one in 1968 and carried it for years on outdoor trips and and backpacking trips; not sure where it went...........SO, I bought a replacement for this trip. I used it several times to cut firewood and it performed flawlessly, just as I thought it would. SHARP teeth with the correct set so the blade does not bind in the wood. I had recently purchased other brands of folding saws that did not perform due to either no or not enough set in the teeth causing the kerf to be way to tight and the blade to bind up. I should have bought this one first instead of wasting money on the others!
Leave your hatchet at home
My first experience with this little saw was during a campout with friends. Between two grown men we were able to cut enough firewood for the weekend in less than 30 minutes. It's lightweight, durable, and well-made. For backpacking, I would recommend the smaller one - you will still be able to cut logs up to about 6 inches. The bonus is that this saw has many other home uses. The guy at the checkout told me he had one for about 20 years and that he uses it often. Well worth it.
Makes the cut
I bought this for a BWCA trip this spring. I have been eyeing it up for some time. Pulled the trigger finally. Very happy I did. The simplicity of the saw is what got me looking at it. The actuality of the saw is spot on. It is made tough. Blade super sharp. Packing it down is a breeze. Only thing to watch out for is. Over tightening the blade an making it slightly twisted. Which will make for tailing off cuts. I corrected the twist. Straight as an arrow cuts. Size limit on log to cut is about 3". I have used it on 4 camping trips now. It will always go with me. Also my friend has requested to borrow it for his solo BWCA trip. I smiled and said "for sure"
