Comments about Standard Blue Foam Pad - Long:
This is your basic foam mat. Much, much better than nothing at all; not nearly as comfortable as (but much lighter and cheaper than) an air mattress. If weight is not an issue, or if cold is, then an air mattress on top of this baby is prime living.
I have also found that a foam pad protects better against the feel of sharp sticks and rocks than a thin air mattress does. A foam pad surrounds them and turns them into large, smooth bumps. An air mattress, on the other hand, protects well against sticks and rocks *except* when your weight is on them, in which case you can still feel their sharpness, which is very annoying. But an air mattress disguises simply uneven ground better.

Comments about Standard Blue Foam Pad - Long:
I use this when winter camping under my 3.2 r-value self inflator pad. I always get a great warm nights sleep.

Comments about Standard Blue Foam Pad - Long:
We went on our first overnight stay in the snow. The temperature was about 20 degrees that night, I have to say these pads work great as insulation from the cold ground, but as a nice comfortable place to sleep the night away????? Well lets just say out of 3 adults and 2 kids, the adults were very tired come morning. All in all we still had a great time and will still use these pads for the insulation factor and to protect the more comfortable pads we purchased for all our other hiking/camping trips we intend to take every chance we get.

Comments about Standard Blue Foam Pad - Long:
The surface layer is a cross-section of the interior closed foam material, and consequently the result is a coarse textured outer layer. While this may aid the pad from not slipping it provides dirt and water a location in which to embed itself. So the once upon a time lightweight pad soaks up water and dirt which not only adds to the weight of the pad in the field but also has negative ramifications to your equipment.
