too much work to open and close
I really did not enjoy the cap on this water bottle. I'd rather stick to my trusted Nalgene. I couldn't figure out how to easily open and close it - I felt it was "sticky" when unscrewing, perhaps due to the magnet. And when I tried using the magnet close, I just ended up forgetting it wasn't closed and my water bottle would leak. I used this camping for a full weekend, clipped to my raft while paddling, on dog walks/hikes, and around the house over the course of two weeks and really see no benefit over other water bottle designs. The only 2 good things about this was the lack of a straw because I really dislike water bottles with straws and the mouth piece is a good size between big enough to get a good gulp and small enough not to splash on your face.
Good, straightforward water bottle
This is a good everyday bottle. When sealed it's water tight, it fits in a car cup holder, and the handle makes it easy to carry. I was confused by the magnet idea and had to google what that meant. I thought that was a fancy new way to keep the cap closed, which didn't seem like it would be enough to be watertight (it twists closed, with the threads on the inside of the part you drink from). The magnet to keep the top open while using is still a little ridiculous, but it is handy once you get used to it. And ,I love that's it's made from recycled material (that should just be the norm now) .
Great all-around water bottle
The CacmelBak Chute Mag is a great daily driver for a water bottle. I've been using it the past few weeks around the house, at work, and while out playing tennis and hiking. I have gotten a number of water bottles over the years, and I'm constantly on the hunt for the perfect one. This one comes close... Pros: -Good size, fits in all cupholders I've seen, with enough water that I don't feel I need to fill it constantly -I love the lid. The internal threading is secure without leaks leading to a smooth spout for drinking from (see photo), the magnet keeps the lid out of the way without needing to set it down and potentially lose it or let it get dirty. -very sturdy, despite some moderate abuse no significant signs of breakdown Cons: -This is made of plastic, and the stainless steel options are only vacuum water bottles. I would love a non-insulated stainless steel option from Camelbak.
The magnetic lid is a game changer
The biggest benefit to this water bottle is the magnetic lid which does two things- holds the lid open and helps guide the lid when closing. No more getting smacked in the face by an unruly lid attached by springy plastic or dropping it in the passenger floorboard when they are not attached. The aid in lid closing is nice when driving as it finds the screw point quickly which allows you to keep eyes on the road. I had no issues with leaking even when I dropped it. It's a good everyday water bottle and I like it so much I will be giving it the highest honor you can provide a water bottle- adding stickers to it.
As Advertised with Add Then Some
So a water bottle is a water bottle but they are not created equal. I was sure about this one but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how NOT having the lid knocking into my chin or cheek was valued. I mean overall this is just like any other single walled bottle I own but the little magnet in the lid that holds it in the open position is nearly ingenious. I find myself grabbing this one now more than any other due to it. The thread on the lid is pretty short too which makes for easy opening and tightening which is something I value too. Needless to say I recommend this bottle.
Has potential
The water bottle is overall pretty good. The magnetic cap could use some refinement - it is nice in workouts if you want to not unscrew it all the time, though with the cap not fully on, the magnet doesn’t help if it gets knocked over - it leaks. Also the cap holder seems like it may break off after more than a few months use. Overall, the design of the spout is really nice and it functions great as a water bottle. I will continue to use it for my workouts and biking.
One major design flaw - it leaks
Had this bottle for c. two-three years - the bottle is great, great design, size, large hoop to clip the bottle when climbing on multipitches. I loved it so much, I even bought two! However, in my opinion there is one job that a water bottle needs to do, which is hold water and not leak. The small "mouth" screw cap got damaged on both bottles!! If I tighten the cap, it, the threads seem to click, and the small mouth remains open. So I have two options, tighten the screw cap, and the top of the cap is unlocked, and the bottle leaks. Do not tighten it enough, and loosely tighten the top small cap, and the bottle doesn't leak if kept upright. But if i put it in my pack, the cap loosens with vibrations, and the bottle leaks. The short of it: Great size, Great design - on major flaw - the bottle leaks. I think this is a design flaw, as it happened to BOTH bottles
I adore this water bottle.
I have owned a lot of water bottles over the years, some more expensive and some less expensive than the Chute Mag. This is far and away my favorite water to keep water with me on the go. I still carry a hydro-flask if I am schlepping something temperature sensitive, but nowadays those (much heavier) bottles get left behind in favor of this one when I just need good ole H2O. My bottle has been everywhere with me over the past several months, from everyday work commutes in town to alpine adventures in the Alaskan Arctic. It has been dropped, scraped, thrown around, used, and abused. Through it all, it has not failed or let me down. There are some superficial scratches in the plastic in some places from contact with rock and metal, but overall, the bottle is in great shape considering the conditions I put it through, and I look forward to making many more memories with it along in tow. The shape of the bottle itself is great: It is thin enough to fit in the not so room cup holders of my car and not so tall that having it in my backpack becomes a chore. Where this bottle really stands out, though, is the lid. The grab handle is just the right size. And the nozzle / cap setup is far an away the best combination of utility and ease-of-use that I have found so far. If I have one nitpick, it is that I am a little worried that the cap retention connection will fail long before the rest of this bottle is ready to give up the ghost. However, that is in part why I spent a longer time (about 6 months) using the bottle before writing up the review, and while slightly looser at the connection point around the base of the nozzle—it can be wiggled side to side a bit, at this point there no sign of outright failure after *heavy* use. The fact that CamelBak incorporates recycled materials into these bottles is icing on the cake. If you need a solid water bottle for everyday use, this one gets a wholehearted recommendation from me. I think you will love it.
My favorite water bottle in 20 years
I've been through MANY water bottes over my 20+ years as an REI member. Most have not lasted very long. I love that this has a small drinking spout that doesn't splash my face, but when unscrewed, the wide mouth easily allows for the addition of powders etc. and makes for easy cleaning. I also LOVE the magnet that keeps the screw top from hitting me in the face when I raise the bottle to drink. The plastic extension on the lid allows me to easily clip this onto a carabiner. I also appreciate that this fits easily into most backpack bottle pockets and many (but not all) cup holders in vehicles. Have hand washed and dish-washered many times and it still keeps on working, so I bought a spare to use in multiple places.
Stinky lid
I like the idea of this lid, but it could be improved significantly. I wash the mouthpiece daily, but it still has a mildew smell unless I put it in the dishwasher. Also, I wish the plastic piece that connects the cap to the lid were made of silicone or something with more give; I know the plastic will break at some point, and then the bottle will have no lid. Lastly, I was excited by the semi-close option (just setting the cap on with the magnet without screwing on the lid. Doing this serves no purpose, however, as the bottle spills with or without the cap on unless it is screwed down. Overall, it is a weird lid, and I will not buy another of these when it breaks. The bottle itself is fine and I like the peach color.
