Battery is fine... the USB connection is useless
There is a massive design flaw with this product: to charge it, you flip up a flimsy USB connector out of the battery body and hope to connect it with an outlet to charge. If the wall outlet is a power strip, everything is fine but if the outlet is on a wall or, god forbid, sideways, the USB connector experiences massive stress. After a few charges, the USB connector started coming loose and after perhaps a dozen charges/recharges, the USB connector finally snapped. I note own a useless brick. Would NOT repurchase.
excellent but...USB input port is a little fragile
I like most everything about it. light weight, charge indicators easy if use, durable housing, pretty good charging capacity. only issue is the flip out USB port is delicate. so if you get one of these becareful not to torque it while it is charging and consider taping the flip USB mechanism while hiking so that you don't damage it. I have an old flip 24 that has lasted a long time, but I have a new flip 36 which is only a few months old that is useless because the USB port used for input charging broke off. Also since the input port is attached so close to the unit without a wire, it can be awkward to charge in tight spaces like a car's USB outlet.
The worst purchase I have ever made at REI
I tried to buy this for my thru hike of the PCT. I liked it’s size. Turns out it is impossible to charge, nearly everywhere. I had to create special platforms to charge it in a wall and it has no cord option at all so I couldn’t plug it into my solar panels on my pack. It hangs by its USB port, so every time it was plugged into an outlet it would hang and pull the whole usb-outlet block out of the wall. I honestly don’t even know how this would ever be convenient in normal life off trail. It broke on my 4th time trying to charge it. I couldn’t even use it at the airport on those under the seat usb chargers. Save yourself the trouble, get an anker or something else.
nice little power bank
The flip series is designed to snap on the back of the smaller goal zero nomad panels. For it’s designed purpose it’s outstanding. Charge the device on the back of the solar panel and then you can supply power to your small devices. Male USB flips out of the battery for the purpose of inserting into the back of a nomad panel. If you are not using it this way, the male usb connector makes it more difficult to charge via traditional cable and wall charging brick method as you would need to plug it directly into a wall usb charging brick and hanging it that way probably isn’t good for durability as it puts the entire weight of the battery on the extended male usb connector
Broke on second day
Utter waste of money. Brought so it could be plugged into goal zeros solar panel and used on extended off grid trip. USB connect snapped on second day making it useless. Unfortunately since I don't live in the USA (though am a REI co-op member) it'll cost be almost as much to post back as it would to get a refund. Hence I'm out of pocket. Immensely disappointed.
Charging issues
This is a long term review. I purchased my Flip in Aug of 2020. I have mainly used it on my backpacking trips and for travel purposes. Got used about 5-7 x month on average with cycling of battery (draining to 10-20% approx every 3-5 months as recommended by Goal Zero) on the months when it wasn't going on extended trips and being used to charge daily. Today I have an almost fully charged battery but it won't charge any devices hooked up to it. Changing cords didn't help. So I have a battery that can't discharge. Not usually a complaint I see about this particular product! Frustrating.
Holds Up in the Cold
Expectations have been exceeded with this little battery. With the GoalZero solar panel I got along with it, this battery has charged quickly and done a lovely job of charging my devices. But what really got me is the charge life and sustain even in colder temps. Here in ND, I am tenting with overnight temps dipping into the 40s and I have been impressed to have not noticed any depreciation in the charge life with this product. Other battery packs, lanterns, etc. die even in these cool temps (40s), but the Flip 36 has not shown any sign of slowing down. Would buy again!
An Inferior Product, REI Customers Deserve Better
What a disappointment. I was excited to add another Flip 36 to my collection because I have one from three+ years ago that I love and works like a champ. However, within one week of purchasing my new one it suddenly lost its ability to hold any charge even after charging overnight on a power bank. I tried multiple times, and even with a different charger too just to doublecheck and same thing happened. Ironically I returned and exchanged it for the same product because I assumed it was a one-off defect, but now reading through the reviews it’s clearly an inferior product that doesn’t deserve space on REI’s shelves. It also feels cheaper in hand than the original, which should have been a clue. I’m returning for a different product entirely. I’m shocked they’ve kept it with all the reviews talking about similar issues! REI should only sell products that work consistently so that customers can maintain the trust so many of us have developed with them over years.
great at first
I bought this about 9 months ago, and I’ve probably used it about 20-25 times. It would charge my iPhone three times if I didn’t have my phone open. BUT I recently tried to recharge the charger and it won’t take a charge! I believe it’s because of the way it has to be charged, the male USB is built in, rather that a separate chord to charge it (if that makes sense). If it was manufactured differently, perhaps it would still work. I’m a bit upset because I payed 44 bucks for this and I would expect it to last more than a year..
Do not purchase
Bought this December of 2020. Used it 3 times in the woods. The charging usb input is on a swivel so it can swing into the side of the pack. Unfortunately, the usb port is only being held onto the main body by the metal used to make the electric connection to usb plug. In short, the breaks super easy. I can honestly say that I babied this thing as to not damage it and it still broke. Great idea with the swiveling port but they so so cheaper out on quality of connections.
