They fell apart
So, I’ve had my Chacos for a little over a year and they fell apart while I was working out in Costa Rica this past summer. The reason why I bought them was because I needed a strappy water sandle that was going to last so I wouldn’t have to add more trash to our landfills. But I just feel like I got played. I looked into sending them in to replace the bottoms and fix the straps but it’s $40 not including shipping to do so. These shoes were already super pricey to begin with.
Favorite Chacos
I've gotten quite a few chacos and these are by far my favorite. They can be a little difficult to slip on and off but for hiking they're really great. I'm not worried about tripping or anything like that. That being said you can squish down the toe strap, but you'll have to readjust if you want to use it again. These are a bit heavy compared to Z/Volv but I think these are the best if you're trying your first chacos. Other pairs I don't trust as much to take hiking for hours, these are a great all around. It has taken me awhile to find the right adjustment with the straps, but it's so worth it. I'll wear these in that rain I love them so much.
Make sure you get the right width
These run narrow. I didn't realize until I had already gained several blisters trying to stretch out my previous pair and I read some reviews stating it's more for narrow feet. I decided to try again with a 7W and my god what a difference! So much more comfortable than expected. I used to question people who told me they LOVE their Chacos when my pair was giving me grief. Didn't realize I just needed them in wide. I am a M in Birkenstocks and most shoes so this was a surprise to me that I need a W for this one. Make sure you get the right width so you can be happy exploring.
Love this version so much better
I owned a pair of the Chacos where it's the two thinner straps instead of this bigger thick one and the thicker single strap has made all the difference. While I loved my previous pair of chacos, it was getting to the point where the two-strap deal was so painful that I couldn't wear them anymore and I had to push down the toe straps. Although it wasn't uncomfortable without the toe straps and they were no longer painful, my feet also were a lot less secured into the sandal so it made walking around a lot harder because they would slide around. I would 1000% recommend this version of the shoe with the single strap, it's a lot less hassle to adjust the straps since there's only one of them and it puts less pressure down on your feet!
Great traction! A bit heavy.
Love these shoes! They are not quite as easy to slip on/off as my Teva's because of the toe strap. They are also a bit clunky/heavy because the sole is much thicker. But, they are really comfortable and super cute! Great grip as well, I managed to climb over a log jam and through about 4 ft of water on my way to the Oneonta Gorge and didn't lose traction :)
Great purchase, very satisfied!
First off, I'm very pleased that Chaco offers larger women's sizes so we can get the "cute" patterns :D I bought these several weeks ago and have worn them so much since. The REI associate who helped me decide between no toe strap or toe strap, was amazing. He suggested toe strap because I would be using them for creek and river hiking, so the toe strap would provide better stability (and it DEFINITELY has). I do get some slight blisters when the straps get wet and seem to really tighten on the toe strap, but it is worth it to me for the increased stability. However, I can also pull the toe strap flat where I can't feel it underneath my toe at all. I do this to wear them without if I want (this is nice when you're slipping them on and off or just moseying around camp. I usually hike with the toe strap on, and then pull it flat when I'm done with anything wet or on an incline. Very satisfied.
Very comfortable and supportive..
I had put to my pride aside, bc for some reason I felt buying these shoes made me a raging hippy, but Ive been intrigued by them for some time, so I bit the bullet and went for it. I'm glad I did, too. I wear them all the time. They're comfortable, and so far, no blisters (like I read on other reviews). I haven't done any hiking or major activity in them, but since flip-flops just make my feet ache and are super unsupportive, this sandal has made being on my feet comfortable and definitely more supportive. I tried the version w/o the toe guard, and I personally liked the support that extra piece of fabric offers.
No more pain
I bought these two weeks ago, the moment I tried them on my foot pain went away. I started to suffer from plants facaitis last June, nothing was helping. Thes shoes helped. I think it aligned my foot, my arch was back in place, taken all the extra weight off my heel. It has been two week, all day I feel no pain at all, when I take the shoes off, I feel slight ache but after severe pain for almost a year it is expected, each night the pain is less, I hope over the next two weeks the pain will be gone for good.
Better on Dry Land
These shoes work best on dry trails with large rocks. I've worn these for trail hikes to the water for kayaking and they're great, but they don't perform well for water crossings. I realize there are better options for water crossings, but I was traveling and limited. That said, I wore them for about 4 hours of rappelling, canyoning with river and creek transitions, and trail hiking. After they got wet, the soles of my feet were sensitive to the material of the shoe and started to feel raw. However, the shoes did a good job on the wet boulders without moss. Once I was out of the water and back on the trail, they started to feel more comfortable when they dried off a bit. Overall, good daily sandals with limitations.
Positively surprised, works with bunion
I like shoes with a good footbed, so I had to try the Chaco's. I was just worried about the placement and relative thinness of the straps at the front of the sandal, because I have hallux valgus on one of my feet. I think the version without a toe loop would definitely not work for me, but based on another review I tried the version with the toe loop. The toe loop actually pulls my toe out a bit and so how a similar effect to a toe spreader that I would normally wear in a closed shoe. I am also surprised that the toe loop doesn't rub me at all between the toes. I only had a bit of blistering on the inside of my foot, just under my ankle joint, where the straps are sewn together. When it's really hot, I do find the rubber material makes the sole of my feet very sweaty. But, overall very good, and I don't mind the weight of them.
