by Wild Boar RanchfromIt works!!!If you're like me you've been searching for something small, light, yet powerful to leverage for powering your electronics when you're off the grid, and away in the back country.
I have tried several portable power alternatives, all of which have come up short...they weigh too much to carry, they require you take "fuel" with you, they advertise great things, and fall short....I've returned quite a few items in that regard.
However, this item I will keep. It's not perfect but...the SolarBook 850 is the first portable power source that actually can charge itself completely back, full power,(without plugging into the wall), and it powerful enough to charge IPhones, and my GoPro 3+ Black with the extended life battery attached.
A few things to note...once the onboard battery is dead on the SolarBook 850, it will take about 5 hours of direct sunlight to charge....maybe less with a really great direct sunlight positioning of the panels, and that's on or about what they advertise. It takes about the same time to deplete the battery and fully charge both the GoPro 3+ Black onboard battery and the extended life battery when they are completely dead. They trade off quite well; you will get a complete charge of the GoPro and the extended battery with one complete charge on the onboard battery within the SolarBook 850.
It is perfect? It's close...it's early, I've had it for two weeks, I'm not ready to jump up and down for joy just yet as I have been disappointed so many times from the absolutely false advertising most of the vendors pursue when peddling their "novelty" power sources that really are not worth packing for the trip as they either don't work, don't work as advertised, have insufficient power, or are so cheap and won't last a trip.
This SolarBook is light; it appears to be made well...watch the Bushnell video on it; they're not fibbing when they describe it. The panels are flexible (awesome as I've broken a few others), it comes packed in a lightweight hard case, and it has 2 USB outlets...I suppose you could power to items simultaneously...I have not tried that yet.
Note...I believe that Bushnell states this will charge even on overcast days...I tried...I live in Arizona, it doesn't. 3 consecutive overcast days...no charge....1 day in full sun...charged in a few hours. That I would say is the only misleading statement made by the Bushnell SolarBook product team.
I would rate the SolarBook 850 a 5 but I'm a bit skittish having been disappointed so many times before from other vendors with their solutions that are clearly not as advertised. Time will tell if this continues to perform. If it does continue to perform as it has, then this would clearly be a 5 +.
Yes it's a tad pricey...but it works. Go ahead… by the cheaper ones, I did. You'll be disappointed and either take them back or they will become yet another novelty trinket paperweight.
If you need powerful portable power, that can recover itself from a 0% charge just from sunlight exposure, this is the tool for you.
