REI Members get back an estimated $ 50.00 on this item as part of their annual member refund.

    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

by fromFlimsy This is pretty flimsy and not easy to open and close. The front joint popped off and I had to take the whole thing off so I could get enough leverage to pop the thing back on. I ended up taking it back and exchanging it for a Yakima because I didn't have a lot of confidence in it. Too bad because the install is a bit easier than the Yakima but I didn't want to deal with the joint coming off during a road trip. Maybe I should have just spent the extra money for the Sonic.

by fromReplacement Thule This was used to replace an old Thule. Just learned is can use Vans roof rack w/o optional cross bars. Should reduce wind noise.

by fromNot good As with the previous reviewer, at highway speeds the leading edge of the carrier would lift and open a one inch gap. First time we used it it was raining and obviously the contents got wet. We could see the front of the carrier thru the sunroof window. It would open at about 60mph and would then close when slowing down. Was being used on a 2007 Honda Odyssey. The carrier must be properly closed to remove the key so it was not user error. REI was totally great about accepting it as a return and we purchased the (more expensive) Thule Sonic XL and have not had any problems with it.

by frompoor design Does not stay shut at highway speeds, wind forces front and back of box to open a gap of a few inches. The hinges that allow opening of the box from either side do not provide enough force to keep the box completely closed at 60+ mph.

by fromNice box We purchased this box for a family vacation, 6 out of 7 seatbelts occupied meant not a lot of room for gear. The box on top accommodated sleepingbags & clothes for everyone, leaving the passenger area free for snacks and personal entertainment gear. NEVER would have made this trip without the box. Worth every penny at full price, but we used our yearly 20% off Member coupon, which made this an even sweeter deal!

by froma very good box very easy to install, but needs two people to put it on and take off as it's large and not that light. I've read other reviews that complain about rain leaking should be noted that there is no water tight seal that goes around the rim of the lid and box. so when we were driving on the highway through a heavy rain storm yes, a few drops of water did creep it's way in at the nose of the box. however, i was able to stare up at the box thru the front windshield as we were driving, and there was no issue with the lid lifting up because it was catching wind or didn't close properly. so i assume that those that had excessive amounts of water getting in was because they either over packed the box or didn't close it properly (which is hard to do since the key cannot be removed without the locking mechanism properly engaged). so despite the few drops of water that came in, i still the the xl force is a great buy since it made packing for a trip with kids much easier, there was no wind noise, and it functioned as reasonably as i'd expect it to.
