The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.
Rated3out of5byTrentMfromNot as good as the older modelI work outdoors in all kinds of weather (rain, snow, 100 degree heat, etc.) Of course, hiking shoes are the obvious choice for this job because they are light weight and water proof.
I owned the older version of these shoes (with Goretex) and they were much higher quality. I wore them for about a year and a half before they were worn out. When I bought this pair, the employee who assisted me told me that Merrell developed their own version of Goretex and that it didn't "breath" as well as Goretex, and that it was "water resistant" and not quite "water proof." I figured I would give them another shot so I bought this pair.
It seemed as if I was right between sizes as the pair I ended up with felt slightly too big, but the next size down was definitely too small. I wore these shoes pretty consistently for the last six months or so and they are now more or less worn out. I wore these shoes about four days per week, mostly in transit from one place to another (plane, car rides) and then for about 20 hours per week outside. For the most part, I was standing stationary (standing or sitting), with a little bit of walking around. I have spent up to 6 hours in the rain in these shoes and did not have any problems getting wet, but I was never in more than a half an inch of water.
After only 6 months, this pair was worn out and was starting to hurt my toes. My opinion is that this pair of shoes is inferior in quality to the previous version. I expect quality to increase over time, not decrease. If you plan to do a mile or two of hiking on a Saturday afternoon here and there, this may be a good choice for you. If you plan to wear these shoes day in and day out, choose a different pair.
Also, I rarely write reviews online, but if you are like me, shoes are one of the most important things that you own and you need to make informed decisions when purchasing them.

Rated2out of5bycrotalusfromExceptional width, not terribly durableI tried the Merrell shoe as a long-time Vasque wearer. My feet have widened over the years, and I needed more room in the toe box. These boots provide needed toe space, but lack any ankle support and fall apart easily when compared to other boots. Though they might be excellent for casual trails and walking around town, I'd stay away from them if you plan to do any long distance hiking or hiking in rocky areas.

Rated5out of5bygel52fromQuality productThe shoes are a good cross between a leather hiking boot and a running shoe. They are comfortable and well made. They are warm to wear; great on cold days, hot in temps above 70. So far they have kept my feet dry through damp conditions.

Rated5out of5byschneidburyfromAwesome, awesome, awesomeI bought these as a gift for someone after having previously purchasing a pair for myself. These shoes are beyond comfortable. They are genuinely waterproof, and keep my feet nice and toasty warm. The best part was that they were comfortable from the get-go, no breaking in period, no painful blisters. I cannot recommend them enough. If you are buying for someone who spends any kind of time outdoors, these would be my go-to present.
