The fact that my bike's tubes are not round may have contributed to the difficulty in installing this device. I could get it to work, but only if the magnet hit the pick-up; setting it as close as possible, less than 1mm, still didn't work. Have returned it.

Comments about Blackburn Atom SL 3.0 Wireless Bike Computer:

Very poor quality bike computer. My first one was defective: the transmitter wouldn't transmit no matter what I did (even after trying different magnets). The second one, I found after much trial and error, had a transmission distance of only a foot and a half or so. With the transmitter as high up the fork as possible it barely worked; when I had the transmitter lower down the fork it didn't work at all. It's ridiculous that such a poor quality product could make it on the market at all. Save yourself many headaches and avoid this product.

Comments about Blackburn Atom SL 3.0 Wireless Bike Computer:

Read the reviews concerning adjustment. You have to fiddle with it to get it to work. I agree with the <1mm for sensor gap. Didn't know that the Blackburn symbol was displayed on the upper left of LCD when sensor was working until I had finally adjusted it. The manual is useless and very small print. No help from online either or any troubleshooting. Otherwise, works very well once you go through the difficult adjustment process. I received this as a gift from my son for Fathers Day

Comments about Blackburn Atom SL 3.0 Wireless Bike Computer:

I bought this to use on my road bike. I don't race, but I ride both for fun and for cross training, so I was looking for something simple and inexpensive without a bunch of unneeded bells and whistles. I liked that the screen on it one was a little bigger than some of the other models, and it was one of the less expensive wireless computers at REI. I'm a klutz so I would probably break the wire if I got a wired model.

Out of the box there were just a few parts. Like one of the other reviewers noted, I found the sensor that mounts to the fork to be a little clunky (see pic), but on the road it did not affect the bike's performance at all other than being a little unsightly. If that's a major hang-up for you, go with a wired model. Even though the manual was tiny (and I have good eyes), installation was simple, intuitive, and required no tools.

Once the computer was installed, I had to mess with it a little in order to get it working properly. I was disappointed that neither the manual no Blackburn's website had any troubleshooting information and my best resource was other reviews on REI's website (thanks guys!) which prompted me to write this. I'd recommend mounting the sensor about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up the fork (see pic) and turning it slightly inward so that the spoke magnet just barely clears the sensor when the wheel spins (as in <1mm compared to the 1-3mm recommended in the manual). Like one of the other reviewers, I also had trouble with the WiFi in my apartment apparently interfering with the computer, but once I got it outside everything worked like a charm, so I was really pleased with that.

On the road I was really happy that the speed display was large and easy to read. It was also really easy to cycle through the other readings while riding. The only thing I absolutely did not like was that the distance readings are displayed out to 3 decimal places (so like 25.423). Mostly it was really hard to see where the decimal place was, but also the vast majority of us don't need our distance reported out to the thousandth of a mile (that's like 5 feet!) or even the hundreth. That's kind of a silly thing to complain about though.

Overall, given my needs and my budget, this was just what I was looking for. Happy trails!

I gave this to my wife as a gift and it is ok for a beginning bike computer. The instruction manual needs bigger print. The hardest thing we had, was adjusting the setting to zero but finally have that down. Not sure if it waterproof. Couldn't "see" in the manual if it was or not. It has gotten wet a few times & seems to still be going.

Unit never picked up the wheel movement no matter what I tried. It doesnt help that the manual is nearly useless with tiny drawings and broken English. I looked everywhere online for help. I wish REI didnt sell this kinda junk. I buy from them usually confident that the brands are good. I will stay away from Blackburn.

Comments about Blackburn Atom SL 3.0 Wireless Bike Computer:

This is a very attractive computer for the price. It is just the right size and sits nicely on the stem. However, the sensor and clip that goes on the fork and rim are a bit bulky. The reviewer before me had issues with getting it to connect with the receiver. I had the same problem at first but you just have to move it extremely close together. The manual says 1-3mm. Its more like <1mm. Just get it as close as you can with the sensor without having it hit. It doesn't move around while riding so after you set it up, it'll be fine. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is for the difficulty of setup. Other than that, it's a pretty decent computer.

Was unable to get the product to install / work. Consider myself a reasonably handy guy, and after half an hour of moving the sensors up and down the fork of my Trek 3900, I was ready to start throwing tools. Returning to REI to try another.
