REI Passage 40 Pack - Kids' is rated 4.75 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for kiddos on backwoods hikes BACKGROUND: My kids, ages 9 and 7 (the 6-year old is still too small for the pack adjustments) carry these packs on backwoods trips. I keep them under 22lbs, but they carry their own sleep system, change of clothes, jacket, rain gear, snack pack, water, and some odds & ends like knife, journal, 1st aid kit, and fire kit. We hike trails that range from flat to rolling to seriously steep. We hike 4-8 miles a day depending on the terrain. For reference, in the Olympic National Forest, we've hiked places like the Hoh River Trail as far as Lewis Meadows (easy terrain) and the Lake Angeles and Klahhane/Switchback Ridge trails (seriously steep, with multiple snow patch crossings in late June). We average 4-5 days on our backpacking trips. These are kids taking on adult-sized hikes, and they're pretty darned good at it--moreso with good gear. PROS: - comfort, adjustments, pockets - will fit a bear canister (see REI item 624081) in the sleeping bag compartment. Not the best place as it puts the weight down low, but it works when Dad is out of volume in his pack. - adjustable for the kids' ever-lengthening torsos. They'll get years out of these packs. - anti-barreling and stability means they stay comfortable with bulky loads (our Kelty Big Dipper sleeping bags are not so compact) and don't sway around when maneuvering technical areas, thus saving the kids' not-so-boundless energy CONS: - this retail price is steep for *anything* for kids. Thankfully, it looks like this pack will last. Of coure, they'll want to take them to school, and I won't let them. Dad's such a drag. - not really waterproof, but who packs anything without a dry-bag and/or zip-locs? OBSERVATIONS: - extra space can end up packed with extra junk. Be disciplined. Work to keep total weight under 30% of body weight. - these packs on the kids significantly increased their ability to comfortably carry a load over time, and reduced my overall load. - I started with a 2-pocket Jansport bookbag and graduated to their 6-pocket external frame when I was a Boy Scout. I'd have killed for something this comfortable and configurable. As it is, after our last trip, I was so jealous of their packs after decades of external frames and whatever the Army issues me (thanks for the back problems, ALICE and MOLLE), I went out and bought my own new pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect day pack or school bag I bought both of my boys, ages 9 and 6 1/2, this day pack for Christmas and it fits both of them really well. They love this pack. My 9 year old is average size and my 6 1/2 year old is small for his age but the pack works well for both of them. We have taken a few hikes using the packs and we are pleased with the quality. A great buy for your kids!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack Bought this pack for my daughter when she was 6. Two years later when buying my son his first pack I am buying it again for him. After multiple trips my daughter still loves this pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well worth it This pack has made it through two of my kids and will certainly be ready for the rest. It holds enough kid size stuff, it rides comfortable, and it looks like a "real" backpack. The only down side is the weight. This is a seriously heavy pack, but it is bomb proof. Only four stars for making my kids pack weigh more than my 65l.
