Comments about Gregory Targhee Winter Pack - 35 Liters - '09 Closeout:
I have had this pack out skiing about seven days now, so I feel comfortable now saying that it's a great ski pack and I'm very happy with it. I looked at many models before settling on this one. The design is very well thought out, with enough room for all the usual gear and not too much extra. I have an old Voile shovel that's bigger than average, but it fits in the shovel pocket just fine. Skins, probe, and shovel handle all have their special spot. Main compartment has room for my 10"x2"x4" repair/first aid kit; goggles; puffy jacket; 100 oz hydration bladder; lunch & snacks; extra gloves, socks, balaclava & neck gaiter; and I think there's enough room left over to cram a harness & short rope in there, although I haven't tried that yet.
The suspension system is great, with skis strapped on in diagonal mode it hardly feels like they're there. They're on there solidly & do not swing around at all. When skiing the pack is not noticeable. And it feels durable and well-constructed.
Any quibbles are minor. It isn't the lightest pack in its size range but I think the weight is worth it for the comfortable load-carrying suspension. It has a lot of zippers and straps, but they are all useful. And like most packs, the waist belt is huge. I've got it cinched down almost all the way for my 32" waist (pack size M), and yet it could accomodate someone with twice that girth. I don't see too many of them bootpacking up Mt. Glory but there may be some skinnier than me. I think the pack may run a little larger than the sizing chart indicates, I'm 6'1", 165 lbs, 20" back and the M fits me almost perfectly. L is definitely too big for me (I was able to try one on).
I have been backcountry skiing nearly 20 years and am demanding on my gear. This is an excellent ski pack.
