Comments about Hi-Tec Backcountry eVent Hiking Boots - Men's - '08 Closeout:
This is my first experience with this brand. I wanted something lightweight, low to mid height, with good traction with moderate lugs, realtively stiff, and waterproof event for long day hikes with occasional snow fields in the high mountains. I wanted something comfortable on those long hikes where you are appreciative of both that and the amazingly light weight. These boots fit the bill by the numbers, but fit and quality were the two unknowns as I am used to hiking Asolo, Garmont, LaSportiva, and Scarpa. I thought I would take the chance as I didn't find direct competition in these trusted names.
My first impression of the build was good. The sole being vibram should be solid. The lugs were relatively deep and should provide good purchase in mud and snow compared to other light trailshoes and runners. Also should last a while opposed to thin rubber that will wear down to slicks in no time. The fit felt tight. Granted I have wide feet, by the toe box felt cramped in both length and width. The flexible give in the fabric uppers made the fit bearable though. The instep and ankle laces can not really be adjusted independantly which reduces comfort and fit. Two major comfort complaints. There is a ridge in the seam on the tounge that will poke at your ankles when the laces are tightened and are very irritating. Also, there is a similar seam that runs across the interior heel of the boot that makes it painfull in the most blister prone area of the heel. For some reason I didn't notice this walking around the house, but did after just half a mile on the trail. I thought that maybe a little break in and these items would improve, however after 10 miles of hiking, I noticed the outsole rubber delaminating from the midsole. The shoes are going back. My overall expectations for this product were high, but didn't deliver on fit nor quality.

First ordered in 9.5, my normal size. Felt small so re-ordered in 10 which felt OK. There is an inside seam along the heel that protrudes and keeps the heel from locking in. It is positioned just right to be a blister maker. I would spend a fair amount of time walking around the house to make sure these are going to work for you before endeavoring onto the trail.

A design flaw in these boots caused large blisters above the heels and on the tops of both feet. Turns out they were caused by rough seams inside the boots. The ones on the underside of the tongues were especially hard, digging into the tops of the feet when laces need to be tightened for ankle support. Very disappointed (and painful).

I purchased these boots on sale a few weeks ago from REI. I was surprised at the weight, they are very light despite their somewhat bulky appearance. I just returned from a trip to California where these boots got a good workout hiking through Yosemite and Big Sur. They felt comfortable almost immediately and my feet never felt tired or got heavy as we hiked. My only comment is that the lining of the left boot, near the toe started to shift a little after 8 or so hours. But the next time I put them, a few days later the loose lining was gone. Who knows?
Overall, I recommend these boots.

Comments about Hi-Tec Backcountry eVent Hiking Boots - Men's - '08 Closeout:
I've hiked about 20 miles in these boots and have had very satisfactory results. After hiking the first few miles, my right heel became sore from contact with the boot. On my next hike I wore a bandage on that heel, and shortly thereafter the problem cleared up completely on its own. It was just due to a short breaking-in period. Now both boots are extremely comfortable and have remained so after another 10-12 miles of hiking in varying conditions. The boots fit very well in my regular size (8.5). I can also report that the boots are very waterproof, after walking 10 miles on a very wet trail through puddles and stream crossings. The outer soles are very rugged, with great traction. One reason I ordered these boots is because I have another pair with the same outer sole that has held up very well after several years of climbing mountains in Colorado. The boot has a thick, comfortable tongue that pads and protects the upper foot very well. The boot is very appealing in design and style. The overall quality is outstanding. They are so comfortable and stylish that I love to wear them everywhere! My only complaints are minor- the laces are a little too short (which can be easily rectified by skipping an eyelet) and the material is a little bulky. I am very happy to have gotten such a great deal on these boots from REI.

I bought these because my Vasque Sundowners are starting to give after 10 years of fairly regular use. I'd heard good things about Hi-Tec and these were very discounted. Now, I didn't expect them to measure up to my beloved Vasques but I thought they could get me by for a while. I was looking for a general all-purpose boot that would be good for my daily short walks on tundra and rocky terrain and weekend jaunts up little mountains.
These boots DON'T fit the bill. The are low cut in the back and the tongue is large which contributed to the pinching on my lower shins and ankles. I had bruises from wearing them for a day in the office! I gave them another day of painful wear in hopes of breaking them in, but it wasn't worth it. The heelcup also had a little ridge that began rubbing my heel and irritated it.
I ignored the reviews because the price was so good, but I just can't wear them. I'm returning these and going with a pair of boots I know and trust.

Quality components-Vibram soles, light weight, very good support, however there is a seam that runs across the back of the ankle that makes the boot very uncomfortable and hurts after just a few steps. I wore them for a few hours inside, but they became unbearable.
Purchased on clearance for a great price, I should have read the reviews first they were very accurate.

Overall these boots are very well made. Just like the other review. My only problem was that there is a heel support that really digs into the back of the heel. The boots were fine on my slightly smaller left foot, so if you have smaller feet they might work out for you. They will just take a lot of breaking in. Cheers ~ jtk
