Comments about Victorinox 4.8 Watt LED Flashlight - '08 Closeout:
This is a good, lightweight 2-AA LED flashlight; just on-off. Note: the battery polarity is counter-intuitive. Compared to a Gerber LX 1.0 (1 Watt Luxeon LED) the light output is as high or a little better (visual photometry only), the beam is nice but not very broad. But the Gerber has a heavy aluminum housing; this Victorinox has plastic endcaps and is much smaller and lighter but still appears well made. I do not know where the "4.8 Watt" rating comes from, unless that is the power into the inverter to raise the battery voltage to LED levels and maintain it there. I assume that the Gerber has 1.0 Watts into the LED, with fresh batteries.

Comments about Victorinox 4.8 Watt LED Flashlight - '08 Closeout:
I picked up one that looks just like it but its got CREE technology (Cree L.E.D.) bulb. It is easily 3-4 times brighter than the normal mini mag flashlight. It is similar in weight but is way way brighter. I end up throwing it into my pack as a backup to my Petzl Tikka and find myself using it more. It's great for peaking into rock crevices and caves and I take it every morning and night on walks with the dogs. It's a cool little light and I'm sure it will be around for many years.

Comments about Victorinox 4.8 Watt LED Flashlight - '08 Closeout:
I bought this flashlight to use on the job. I use it every morning in the before dawn, inspecting my vehicle. It has a strong, large, bright central beam with a widely spread area of less intense peripheral light.
The flashlight is well-machined and the parts fit together smoothly and precisely. It has a metal body. The on-off is controlled by twisting the bezel, so it cannot be switched on by accidental bumping. It gives every indication of being a high quality product that will last more than decade. It's good enough quality you could give it as a gift and not feel chintzy.
I have used my first one long enough to have changed the batteries once. I would estimate I used it approximately 20 hours of burn time. It still cast a useably bright beam on the old batteries, but this tool is important enough to me that I changed batteries as soon as I was aware it was starting to dim a bit.
I was happy enough with my first one that I recently bought a second one to keep in my personal car for emergency use.
This is a very good flashlight. I would find it too large, too heavy, and too bright to take backpacking, but I am very picky about my bping equipment. For applications where size and weight are not such overriding concerns, I don't think you'd ever be sorry to have this light with you.
