Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
The first one that my wife bought me for Christmas did not work. I didn't know it until it was fully installed. It would not sense the magnet. So test yours before installing it. The second one worked great. REI did not hesitate on the return, as usual.
I like the temperature readout. It seems fairly accurate even in the direct sunlight while moving. There are no buttons to change the modes. Rather the entire computer body moved up on the mount, acting as the button. This is not totally intuitive when you first are setting up the computer. The setup was also a pain, like most of these computers from any manufacturer. It has two wheel size settings so you can switch the computer between bicycles, but to do this you would need to purchase an extra bar mount. Overall I like the size, number sizes, and function. I've had it installed for about 2 months at the time of this writing.

I had this computer for 2 years and over 2,400 miles and it has been great!

Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
I had a wireless unit of another brand that did not work out of the box. I returned it to REI and got this one as I wanted the temperature feature, one battery operation, and lots of information at once. This one did everything but cadence (that I really didn't need). This is a wired unit with a sturdy wire to the fork and the spoke magnet is nice and strong so you have some room for error.
This one has smaller text but gives all numbers you want without scrolling. Just have to put up with a wire.
I like that.

Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
I love the multi-line display. No more switching to see what time it is! The multi-bike setting makes me want to buy another wiring harness for the other bike. BTW, thanks to the guy who complained about using cable ties--he inspired me to use rubber o-rings to mount the sensor, and thanks to the people who wrote that they used their old computer's magnet--I did too. It's much more powerful than the included huge one, so reliability is even better, with no alignment problems at all.

Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
Overall, I like the design of this cyclo-computer that allows you to see many data points on one screen. Since this computer has no buttons, you have to quickly push the computer forward on the mount once to switch between the odometer, avg speed+max speed and temperature+time displays. When you push the computer forward for three seconds, it clears all your data.
Unfortunately, it did not take long where one push forward (to switch between the different views), automatically cleared all the data. I've cleaned the sensors on the back of the computer and the mount and this has remained to be a consistent problem for me. It's so annoying to lose all your data during a ride. While the concept of pushing the computer forward to view different data is a simplistic one, the frustration I've experienced with this computer will lead me to buy a cyclo-computer with buttons the next time around.

Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
This is my third Plane Bike computer. The first two wireless computers died (REI happily exchanged them!) I got fed up with wireless and just switched back to wired. The problem is that changing modes on Planet Bike computers requires you to push the entire unit forward. Usually not a problem but on this unit, it is very, very easy to reset your milage ride mid-ride! This never happened on my first two. I was hoping that this would go away with a little breaking in but it happened again this weekend so unfortunately, I'm bring it back to REI and saying good-by to Planet Bike. Bummer.

Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
This is the only computer I have found that has all the information I need on the display at once. Having distance and time simultaneously saves constant clicking to switch from one to the other.
In addition, it is easy to install, has a decent user interface for setup, and is perfectly accurate. I'll probably replace the computers on my other bikes soon.

Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
PROs:
-heavy duty wire (although, it mars your cables significantly if they are not black)
CONs:
-no battery with purchase (nuisance)
-magnet quality/design is questionable compared to other manufacturers
-difficult to remove computer from bracket and return
As a Cateye user for 10 years, I thought I would give this a try based on reviews and functions. Unfortunately, it didn't win me over.

Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
My wife got this for me for Christmas (it was on my wishlist). Set up was pretty easy. Good info on speed, distance, time of ride for a reasonable price. Like the different displays that are available, including temperature. Have about 200 miles on it and have had no reliability problems or memory loss as reported by a few. Very handy the way it slips off easily and into my pocket when I have to lock the bike in public to go shopping or watch a movie. Have thought (briefly) about trading up to a dedicated GPS bike computer but have reasoned, "Why bother?" as I can get directions on my smartphone without the extra expense.

Comments about Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Bike Computer:
I bought this just this fall and so far I have over 300 miles on it.
I'm not sure what the "durable" issues are. I haven't experienced them. It sounds to me like some folks just got lemons. Return it.
I've installed many of these suckers and this one was easy. My handle bar is skinny and I needed all the shims that are provided but it worked out great. I like all the features and it's easy to read.
I had to install the sensor on the inside of my front fork, but it works great.
I do get a different reading than the cyclometer I have used for the last 6 years, but I ride ~4,000 miles a year. A couple tenths of a mile here and there isn't going to matter. Just means I have to ride more. Yahoo!
For the price, it's a great buy.
