I have been using this product on my 7.5 minute USGS maps for over a decade, and I promise you it will add life to your maps.

Here are a few tips for those of you who use USGS maps/GPS for navigation. First, I recommend drawing your UTM grid lines before applying the map seal. I use a piece of cardboard to keep from getting the sealant on my table during application. You will also want to use paper weights keep the map from rolling when you apply the sealant.

I still recommend storing your map in a ziplock bag when on the trail. While the map seal will waterproof your map, I would not suggest exposing your map to an all out downpoor with or without the sealant. I usually fold the map so my trail is visible from inside the bag.

Gave it a 4 as I have not tested it in the rain, or with purchased maps.

Works great on maps I downloaded (for free) from the USGS website or from my GPS software. I printed them on a color laser printer (I would not try it with ink jet printed maps). Then I cut and pasted them together, the sealer also reinforces the seams. It also didn't smear the writing in pencil prior to sealing it.

Don't skimp on the paper, use premium quality laser printer paper (28lb or higher). Cheap paper tends to wrinkle up, saturates quickly and stuck to the posterboard I was using to protect my table. Even the high quality paper stuck to the poster board a little, especially if I took too long before hanging it up. Drape it over a line vice using clothes pins, the paper tends to stick to them.
