Caring for Your Carabiners

By REI staff

General Care Reminders

Keep your carabiners clean and free from burrs that can damage a rope. To sand down burrs, use 220-400 grade sandpaper. If this doesn't remove the burr, destroy the carabiner. Don't file carabiners for any reason.

Always clean and lube your carabiners after contact with saltwater or salt air.

Cleaning

Clean gates by blowing dust and dirt from the hinge area. If additional cleaning is needed, wash the gate in warm, soapy water, rinse it thoroughly and lubricate it with dry graphite, WD40 or a similar lubricant around the hinge area. Wipe off excess lubricant.

Note: Using a dry graphite or dry lubricant will keep the 'biner clean longer, as dirt will not be picked up as readily.

Storage

Keep all carabiners stored away from humid or salty air, damp equipment and clothing, and corrosive chemicals.

Inspection

Check your carabiners regularly for cracks or corrosion. Make sure that the gate opens and closes properly. If the gate does not function properly, or if it's askew or bent, retire the 'biner. 'Biners that have been dropped a significant distance or are damaged should also be retired.
