
Introduction to Snowshoeing (Outing)
Have you ever wanted to extend your adventures when the snow flies but weren’t sure how to proceed? Join REI Outdoor School instructors for a wintry snowshoe hike. We will cover the basics of snowshoeing, from selecting and using the appropriate snowshoe model to winter travel techniques, necessities and tips for a successful trip. On the trail we will help you fine-tune your technique, answer questions and share our gorgeous surroundings. We provide the snowshoes—you bring your sense of adventure and join us for a great winter wonderland hike! Trip operates rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe.

Tired of watching from shore as kayakers glide over the water? Now's the time to join us for an on-the-water class designed to teach you the basics of paddling both sit-on-top and touring-style kayaks. We'll discuss gear selection, proper fit of boat and gear, and basic safety skills. Then we'll head out on the water to learn and practice the forward, sweep, reverse and draw stroke techniques so you can get your boat to go where you want it to. Come join us and expand your outdoor destinations to include the open water! After taking this course, expand on your new-found knowledge in our Kayaking: Level 2 course, which focuses on more advanced boat handling skills and introduces capsize recovery.
Paddle Strokes Practice (Outing)
Have you learned to kayak but still get fatigued while paddling? This personalized coaching session is for kayakers who have learned the basic strokes - forward, reverse, sweep, draw - but need more practice engaging and rotating those stronger core muscles. You'll learn to maximize torso rotation and stroke efficiency so you can enjoy longer, less fatiguing days on the water.
This class expands on the skills learned in our Kayaking: Level 1 class. Gain more advanced paddling skills in touring-style kayaks. In this on-the-water class we will expand on paddle strokes and boat handling skills and we'll teach self-rescue techniques where you will get to practice safe methods of exiting your boat in a capsize, re-entering your kayak with a paddle float, and pumping it dry with a bilge pump. These recovery skills and the safety gear you learn to use are essential to paddling safely on large bodies of water. All kayaks, PFDs, paddles, and rescue equipment provided.

Learn the basics of climbing in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. This limited-enrollment class will include an overview of the dynamic sport of climbing as well as individualized instruction. All gear provided.
Introduction to Outdoor Rock Climbing (Outing)
Come learn the basics of vertical climbing in a natural setting. We’ll focus on building solid fundamental skills such as belaying, crack climbing technique, face climbing technique and maneuvering through the "crux" (most difficult section) of a climb. If you’ve only climbed inside or you are looking to explore climbing for the first time, this is your opportunity to practice with professional rock climbing instructors. We provide harnesses, helmets and all the necessary gear for you to try out this fun and challenging sport! Recommended for those 14 and older; those under 18 must be accompanied by parent or responsible adult.
Climbing Techniques Practice (Outing)
Do you know the basics of climbing but want to improve your technique? Join one of our professional climbing instructors for a small group coaching session and take your climbing to the next level! This course is for people who have learned belaying and basic climbing movement and would like some more time to practice your skills.
Introduction to Climbing Movement (Outing)
Do you know the basics of climbing but want to improve your technique? Join our professional climbing instructors for a day of learning to improve your footwork, handwork, and body movement to advance your climbing skills!
Introduction to Lead Climbing (Outing)
Want to becom a lead climber? Then this is what you’ve been waiting for! This course is designed for those who have experience climbing on and building top rope anchors, and are ready to progress to lead climbing. We’ll teach you how to lead belay, protect from a lead fall, manage your rope and rack, clip gear, and plan your route, all from the safety of a mock lead.
Join our REI rock climbing instructors to learn self-rescue skills no climber should be without. Learn how to get yourself out of tricky situations and also offer help to others when professional assistance is unavailable. This class discusses belay escape methods, ascending to aid an injured climber, and assisting a partner form above. Please bring your own harness, carabiner and belay device. Practicing with your own equipment will better prepare you for “real world” conditions. (If you don’t have your own gear, REI Outdoor School can provide equipment.) All REI rock climbing courses are taught by professional, dedicated climbing instructors.
Climbing Anchors Concepts (Outing)
Learn the basics of building climbing anchor systems. We will cover climbing gear, knots, evaluation and use of natural and fixed protection, and equalizing the forces on the anchor. Traditional climbing gear use is covered in Artificial Climbing Anchors. This is a hands on program where you will build climbing anchors. This outing will focus on construction and assessment of anchors and not on climbing movement.
Artificial Climbing Anchors (Outing)
Learn the basics of building climbing anchor systems with traditional gear. We will review topics covered in Climbing Anchors Concepts like climbing gear, knots, and equalizing the forces on the anchor. The focus will be on traditional climbing gear use.

If you feel shaky on two wheels, this is the class for you. Our trained instructors will patiently teach you the basic skills of riding a bike, including how to balance, how to adjust the bike to your size, and how to shift and brake. We’ll also teach you how to fall off your bike effectively. This outing can help prepare you for our Introduction to Mountain Biking and Introduction to Road Cycling instructional outings. We provide bikes, but be sure to bring your own helmet. Under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Children must provide their own bicycles. Minimum age is 12.
Introduction to Road Cycling (Outing)
Experience the rush of road cycling with our instructors as they teach you the proper techniques of shifting, braking, efficient hill climbing, safe descending, proper body position, and reading the road for safety. This is an educational ride, not a guided tour; we want to teach you how to get more out of your cycling experience. This class is designed for folks getting back into cycling and beginners alike. We’ll start by addressing proper bike fit, making necessary adjustments to improve comfort and performance. Next we’ll demonstrate riding techniques and teach important communication and safety skills to prepare you for the ride. Then it’s off for a great ride to practice what we've learned! New Novara road bikes provided at no extra cost for those without a bike of their own. NO RIDER IS LEFT BEHIND! Please bring your helmet and proper riding apparel. Recommended for those 14 and older; those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

We’ll teach you the trail etiquette techniques that mountain bikers can use to help keep trails open and safe for all trail users. Then it’s off for a great ride to practice all the skills you’ve learned. Novara mountain bikes provided at no additional cost for those without a bike of their own. Recommended for those 14 and older; those under 18 must be accompanied by parent or responsible adult. NO RIDER IS LEFT BEHIND!
Intermediate Mountain Biking (Outing)
If you've been riding for awhile and feel comfortable with your bike and want to take your riding performance to the next level, join our mountain biking instructors as they teach you to navigate advanced terrain and master singletrack portions of some great local rides. We'll build on the skills you've learned in Introduction to Mountain Biking with more practice handling obstacles, switchbacks, ascents and fast-paced descents. Learn to ride the areas you've wanted to explore but were afraid to attempt on your own. We'll also teach and enforce proper trail etiquette to make sure trails stay open and safe for well-behaved mountain bikers and all other trail users. New Novara mountain bikes provided for those without a bike of their own at no extra cost. NO RIDER IS LEFT BEHIND, but this trip is not for beginners, as we ride at a faster pace and cover tougher terrain.

Overnight Backpacking (Outing)
Make the leap from car camping to backpacking. Join our instructors on an overnight trip to a local backpacking camp.You’ll learn camp skills such as proper campsite selection, camp cooking, and Leave No Trace camp etiquette. The instructors will also help you understand the best backpacking equipment for your needs to maximize your comfort and fun.
This easy excursion will introduce your kids to exploring the outdoors and will leave them wanting more. Join our REI Outdoor School instructors on a kidfriendly hike in a local park to discuss tips and tricks for planning family trips into the outdoors. Learn how to pick a good trail and how to keep the kids interested and happy on the hike. A kid-specific version of Leave No Trace principles will be taught to emphasize good habits in the outdoors. The instructor will tailor the class to your family’s needs. Kids need to be old enough to hike or be carried. Bring your child carrier backpack if needed.
Heading out for your first camping trip and not sure what to eat? Tired of always eating the same old camp food? In this hands-on field seminar, our REI Outdoor School instructors teach you how to build a proper camp kitchen, design a menu, and prepare easy, nutritious and tasty meals that will delight your campers and elevate your wilderness experiences! Learn about proper food handling and sanitation techniques and tips on preparing and storing your food to minimize clean-up. You'll also learn all about what stove and fuel types are best for your needs, and then get to prepare and cook your own shared meals on a variety of stoves. We'll be preparing ultra-convenient freeze-dried meals, along with some of our favorite camp recipes from a mix of dried and fresh ingredients that are sure to please! All stoves and kitchen materials, along with all food ingredients provided (options for both vegetarians and meat eaters).

Join an REI Outdoor School Instructor as they lead you through the basics of GPS navigation. Learn how to use your pocket-sized navigator to pinpoint your location, mark waypoints, plot courses, and create routes. Learn about using online maps and transferring route and waypoint information to the GPS. As the Instructor reviews the features to consider when choosing a receiver, they will introduce you to some of the fun and practical applications of using a GPS unit in your outdoor activities. At the end of the session, you will get hands-on experience outdoors with a GPS. If you own a GPS unit, please bring it to the class. Some demo GPS units will also be available.
Introduction to GPS Navigation (Outing)
Are you tired of getting lost on the trail? Learn the latest GPS navigation techniques to keep you headed in the right direction. Head out into the field for a day of hands-on navigation training with our expert Outdoor School instructors. You’ll practice pinpointing your location, projecting waypoints, plotting courses and creating routes out on the trail, so that you can successfully navigate through local parks and your favorite backcountry destinations. Learn to transfer information from the GPS to your map and from the map to the GPS. We will even show you how to utilize your GPS to give you driving directions to your destination (not all units have this ability). If you own a GPS unit, please bring it to get detailed instruction on its features. Demo GPS receivers will be available, as well as maps and compasses, as we enjoy a scenic hike through a local park. This class will provide an overview of the different techniques needed to fully utilize your GPS receiver. GPS Navigation Class is recommended but not mandatory to get the most out of this class.
Advanced GPS: Using Computers and Maps (Class)
Learn about the online tools available for GPS users. Working with various software tools, you’ll learn how to load maps and waypoints, create a trip and download it to a GPS. This class is a must for all GPS users wanting to integrate interactive mapping software to improve their trip planning!
Have you been carrying a compass for years and never actually known how to use it? For anyone heading to the outdoors, map and compass skills are essential to navigating safely. Join our Outdoor School Instructors for a class on learning to use a compass and read a map to help you find your way in the wilderness. Our Instructor will teach you all the parts of a compass and how to choose a style that works for you. We’ll talk about magnetic north, true north, and magnetic variation (declination), and help you make sense of it all. Then you’ll learn how to take a bearing, both in the field and projected onto a map, so you can learn how to triangulate your position and plan a route. Speaking of maps, what do all those squiggly lines mean? We’ll also discuss topographic maps and how to read them to understand your terrain.
Introduction to Map & Compass (Outing)
Join us for an instructional trip to learn how to use a compass and read a map to truly find your way in the wilderness. We'll teach you the parts of a compass and how to make use of them. We'll talk about magnetic north, true north, and magnetic variation (declination), and help you make sense of it all. Then we'll learn how to take a bearing from the terrain, and from your map, so you can triangulate your position and plan a route. Speaking of maps, what do all those squiggly lines mean? We'll look at topographic maps and learn how to read them to understand your terrain. We'll also discuss strategies such as using "handrails" for "aiming off' to improve the accuracy of your backcountry navigation. Map and Compass Basics Class is recommended (but not mandatory) to get the most from this outing.

Find out everything you need to know about the basic functions of your digital camera from a professional photographer and instructor. We will make it easy to learn about your camera’s capabilities. We will cover exposure settings (automatic to manual mode), metering, auto focus, use of flash, file size and type, and playing back images. Please bring your digital camera and owner’s manual to tonight’s class.
Digital Camera Field Trip (Outing)
Are you still shooting in "Auto" mode because you haven’t really learned how to use your camera? Here’s the perfect way to learn the functions of your camera, basic exposure and composition techniques, and how to shoot better pictures under the direction of a professional photographer. Please bring your digital camera and owner’s manual, as well as extra batteries and memory. Basic knowledge of your camera or attendance at Digital Camera Basics is recommended.

Michael Garcia
Michael expresses his spirit for the outdoors by sharing his knowledge passionately with those who seek outdoor therapy. Michael is an avid hiker and volunteers with Outward Bound Los Angeles working with youth of various socio-economic backgrounds. Whether instructing a hiking or navigation outing, Michael is sure to offer an inspirational angle to the importance of human-powered outdoor recreation. With certifications in wilderness travel and medicine, Michael’s motto is “Keep the adventure safe without compromising the effort and experience”. Join Michael along with other instructors for an educational outdoor experience.
Allison Dryden
"Besides world peace, if there's one thing I would wish for it's for people to enjoy the outdoors more." There's such a feeling of euphoria people get when they find an outdoor activity they really enjoy.” When not working at the REI store in Santa Monica Allison enjoys rock climbing, backpacking, and hiking with her husband. She has been an instructor for the Sierra Club for several years and is a rated leader for the Angeles Chapter. Look for Allison on a cycling, climbing, hiking and/or navigation class.

Scott Ammons
Scott is our Los Angeles Outdoor School Market Supervisor. He is also a frequent instructor of Outdoor School classes and outings. “I appreciate the Outdoor School because it gives me a chance to share the places and activities I love with lots of new people.” Scott has many years of experience as an instructor and program manager in the Outdoor Industry including 5 years as an instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). He is a Wilderness First Responder, an AMGA Top Rope Site Manager and has helped hundreds of people learn to appreciate and travel in the wilderness. He has two dogs a wife and a little boy and enjoys getting all of them outside together, “there is nothing finer than a good hike in the Angeles National Forest with everyone you love.”
Nelson Takayama
With his bachelor’s degree in the recreation and leisure studies, Nelson has been promoting outdoor recreation and skills for the past two decades. He describes himself as an avid cyclist (both in road and mountain biking), a well-seasoned backpacker, and an eager student of our natural surroundings. His hobbies include bird-watching and ethno botany. It isn’t uncommon to find Nelson hiking the trails of the local Santa Monica Mountains and coastal beaches where he has led many school groups on nature-interpretive outings. His other interests include rock-climbing, kayaking, and casual conversation in camp overlooking beautiful mountain vistas. You will find Nelson to be a patient instructor. He derives great pleasure in seeing his students succeed.

Amber Cole
"There's something that happens when people play outside. Maybe it's magic, maybe it's hope, or perhaps plain fun. Whatever happens when we go outdoors, I'll take it!" Amber has instructed with Outdoor School from the start in Los Angeles. When she's not pedaling to work at the REI Arcadia store, she's pedaling home from work-enjoying the sights, smells and detours of commuting by bike. "There are so many ways to explore. I want people to find their fun way of exploration and enjoy the process of learning. Grab your harness, your kayak, or jump on your bike and grab some ice cream!" Amber teaches on cycling, climbing, hiking and kayaking programs.

Greg Patrick
Greg is a long time REI Manhattan Beach staff member and has instructed for many outdoor programs including Naturalists at Large, Rockreation Climbing Gym, and the Boy Scouts. He has climbing site management training from the American Mountain Guide Association, has an Avalanche level III certification, is a Wilderness First Responder and has worked Ski Patrol. His REI Clinics have been extremely popular for years and he continues to educate REI customers with the Outdoor School.

Gene Mezereny
Gene instructs climbing, cycling, navigation, paddling and photography. His passion for the outdoors began at age 4. Thirty years later, twenty of that at REI, Gene has gained a breadth of knowledge and insight from handling lots of gear, personal challenge and adventures in the mountains, deserts, lakes, rivers and sea. Now through REI’s Outdoor School he can share those experiences with school participants so they can build a solid foundation for their future adventures. In addition to the vast wilderness experience he is published author and photographer; “for me photography ties the moments of the wilderness experience together.” “One proud moment was being contacted by a museum to use one of my images as a backdrop for an installation highlighting the life of John Muir.”

Arlan Pfohl
Arlan felt so passionately about the REI Outdoor School program, he wasted no time signing up as an instructor when it became available in 2007. Arlan brings nearly two decades of kayaking, rock climbing, mountaineering and mountain biking experience to the table. His unique teaching style combines humor and relevance to help students retain and apply their new skills. Arlan’s greatest joy is demystifying the great outdoors for others. “I especially enjoy teaching activities that many feel are beyond their ability. When I teach someone the fundamentals of rock climbing or advanced paddling techniques, they get a sense of empowerment. They too will desire to have that one-on-one experience with nature.” When Arlan isn’t teaching for Outdoor School, he is the supervisor of the Action Sports dept. at the REI Santa Ana store.
Ed Korb
Ed Korb is a long time Santa Ana store employee and avid multi-sport athlete. His love for multi-sports began at a young age when he purchased his first mountain bike. From the back woods of Utah to the epic mountains of Whistler, BC, Ed has inspired and motivated many people to get outside and become active. He is a natural leader in map & compass, GPS navigation, kayaking trips and most recently a 7 day staged mountain bike race. Ed has ridden all over the world and loves to share his enthusiasm for the outdoors. Look for Ed on your next adventure with Outdoor school.
Mark Langton
Mark has been Teaching Mountain biking for REI’s Outdoor School in Los Angeles since it first started. He began mountain biking in 1983 in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California. He is a pioneer in Southern California’s land access movement, helping to found the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association (CORBA) in 1987 and Mountain Bike Unit volunteer backcountry patrol in 1988. He joined the staff of Mountain Biking magazine in 1987 and was an editor there for many years between 1987 and 1995, where he wrote dozens of technique articles as well as covering the best riders in the world. He also began teaching mountain bike skills for the Learning Tree University in 1987 and in 1992 started CORBA’s Introduction to Mountain Biking Skills Class, and continues to teach the class today. He also just recently completed a mountain bike skills book, Mountain Bike Master, for Menasha Ridge Press.
