    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

by fromIt'll do. . . . I have been searching high and low for a 'convertible' backpack (a pack that will also turn into a messenger or crossbody bag). On other sites, this bag is (erroneously) listed as 'convertible', which is how it popped up on my radar. While this bag does not meet my desired requirement of being truly 'convertible', it does fulfill my requirement of not looking like a schoolbag (I work at a university - but I don't necessarily want to look like a student). I use it to commute to and from the train, and walking from the train to work - and since I lug a lot of food and other paraphernalia with me each day - back and forth - I was in need of something I could load on my back to even out the weight. Using a shoulder bag was just plain uncomfortable and was leading to aches and pains - as well as a reluctance to do much walking at all. So, while Sherpani products are not necessarily my 'style', this bag seemed acceptable in that it is slightly more classy than the average school backpack. I got the heather grey color, which has (unfortunately) mint-colored plastic zipper pulls. It has quite a few zippered pockets, both inside and outside the bag. Added bonus were the compartments on the outside, where I could tuck an umbrella, my coffee thermos, and/or my travel coffee cup. After using this bag for a little while, I've decided that this was a good purchase. It holds everything my big shoulder bag holds, and it's fairly comfortable to wear. I now have no excuse not to walk to the lightrail station from my house, which was the point of the purchase. Here's what I had loaded in it today (see photo below), and I could probably have squeezed a few more things in as well by utilizing the many pockets: Three Tupperware containers (two largish, one small) One small glass jar One small umbrella One thermos One travel coffee cup One lightweight rain jacket (VERY lightweight - see my review on this) One lightweight scarf Largish eyeglasses case Eyeglass cleaner Small leather purse It fits everything comfortably. It also sits comfortably on my back, and I believe there is some padding on the back panel as well, though some of the contents still jabbed me in the back this morning - that can be easily rectified by just rearranging the contents better. I don't believe it's waterproof or even water resistant (a bummer for someone who lives in Portland!) but it is machine washable. The straps are thick but unpadded, and though they are (so far) comfortable, I wonder how they will feel when I'm wearing a sleeveless shirt or dress - they may be a bit rough. All in all, I'm pleased with the purchase - it's not *perfect*, but it meets my needs for the moment and it wasn't expensive.
