Rated 2 out of 5 by from C'mon Man I JUST purchased this daypack (highly recommended by REI employee) for my extensive 3 month trip to Indonesia. I used the pack as my carry on while flying. I hadn't even made it across the Pacific when I noticed the fraying and unraveling at multiple areas on the pack. In particular, the mesh is separating from the stitching and elastic. Hoping it keeps together for the next couple months, but I see a replacement in my near future. Maybe its just a lemon, but dang there are three areas of damage and I haven't even pushed the pack yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Pack Bought On Sale So recently I purchased the REI Flash 22 Pack. It is a solid day pack and I would give it a 5 / 5. I couldn't find much wrong with this bag when taking in all the different aspects combined with the price. I would easily suggest this to anyone looking for a nice cheap day pack that will not let you down. See the review below. This pack is made out of a durable rip-stop nylon which is what you would expect from most bags, especially ones made for outdoor uses. I have not tested the quality of the fabric on tree branches, bushes, thorns, etc. but I can say that it feels like the kind of fabric that you wouldn't worry too much about when you are out heading down your favorite trail. The mesh material used in the construction of the pockets is also a pretty standard material. I cant really find a downside to the construction of this pack. My first thought was the quality of the seams when I pulled on the various parts, but this bag holds up pretty well, and it feels like one well put together piece. Because this is an ultralight day pack, I cant foresee loading this up with unbearable weight, so realistically you should never have to test the limits of these stitches. I am about 6'0 175lbs and this bag suits my size very well. A larger man might find this to be a little small on their frame, but it is still a nice bag that hugs the body and weighs hardly anything, amounting to roughly 1lb when empty. The front of the pack on the outside has a nice set of nylon half loops stitched into the bag, having 7 stitched loops on both the left and right center of the bag about 5 to 6 inches apart. These are useful for hanging or attaching any sort of outside tools or items you may be carrying. The side mesh pockets are larger than expected, capable of holding any sort of water bottle I can find. In comparing sizes, it can hold something the size of a 2 liter bottle. The inside pockets are capable of holding a liquid bladder, and the pocket along the back is basically the size of the pack itself enabling a huge amount of open space. There is a hole in the top of the pack to make this compatible with a bladder, and it is equipped to hold the tube at the chest buckle, making this pack even better. The other inside pocket is smaller and is more useful for smaller items like wallet, map, keys, energy bar, whatever small items you may be carrying that you want to keep inside. The main compartment is top loading with no other access such as a sleeping bag compartment or anything of that sort. There is another compartment on the top that folds over to buckle and close the bag, and this is also top loading. Not that it is surprising, because it isn't, but this is a nice addition of space to an extremely light bag that offers a surprisingly large amount of space. This bag is capable of strapping up quite a bit to the outside, making it suitable for (but not suggested) larger weight. I haven't had many opportunities to use this bag considering it is now February, and there is a considerable amount of snow on the ground, combined with negative temperatures. However, in the few times I did get to use it, I once forgot I was wearing it because of how light it is. It easily held everything I needed to take with me, with plenty of space for more as well. The water bottle in the side pocket was a little difficult to reach when dressed up for winter weather with the pocket a little higher up on my side than expected, but it is not something that I imagine couldn't be resolved with a little tweaking of the straps. There was not much strain on my shoulders with the little weight I was carrying, and it does the job. I managed to pick this bag up at REI on sale for almost 50% off and it was well worth the investment. I cant wait for spring and summer to show up so I can get more opportunities to get out and use this pack.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from fraying/breakdown at key points Love the concept of the pack, not too happy with the construction. I have the Flash 18 and got this one so that my wife and I could both have good day packs for out trip to Panama for 2 weeks. Used the pack for my carry on and daily use with a hydration pack, extra water, snacks etc. Never had more than 10-15 pounds in it at a time, pretty light use. About 4-5 days into the trip I noticed fraying of both shoulder straps where they attach to the top of the pack and fraying at spots on the shoulder straps as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from REI Flash 22 Pack Perfect for short hikes from camp or home without having to lug a full pack. Great lightweight day pack that's hydration compatible with good storage for snacks, light clothing, poles and various pocket items. Looked at waist packs but for the same price get triple the utility. Just what I was looking for at a good price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far, so good Used once so far on a backpack and it performed just fine. I removed the thin foam backpad so that it packed up small in the backpack and then used it for side hikes. I like the two mesh pockets for Nalgenes plus the internal and external zipped pockets. Much more useful than the Flash 18 because of that and also a better configuration than the comparable Marmot Compressor. Does its job well. I don't like the orange version but the gray is fine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shoulder straps decay immediately I never loaded this pack with more than 10-12lbs. The shoulder straps started to tear after the first use and continued to fray throughout subsequent uses. I think that the problem lies in the elastic trim lining the shoulder straps. I suspect that if it didn't stretch so easily, they would be a little more resistant to the wear-and-tear from light loads. I hope that REI fixes that feature because save for that, it would be a nice day pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good for short trips you will always need the one thing right at the bottom of the bag so you have to unpack everything to get it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little pack. Stuffed the Flash pack in the bottom of my regular pack for side hikes on a three-day trip to the Len Foote Hike Inn at Amicalola Falls State Park. It didn't add any noticeable weight to my pack and held up well for the 8 mile round trip from the Inn to Springer Mountain. Looking forward to many more day hikes with it.
