Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. by fromEpitome of a quality product! Besides it being a bit on the heavy side, the filter works flawlessly and gives you fresh clean water from pretty much any source you will run into in the backcountry. I have not used the gravity filter option but it is a great feature in the unlikely event the manual pumping fails. Now with the new design (backwards compatible!) it makes it easier to clean out and backflush. Adding more total capacity as well (150g - 180g). Great product!

by fromEpic Water Filter I've had my XL water filter and just recommended a friend to get the XLE unit. Both units have worked well on our outdoor adventures. I love the double action pumping that gets water flowing on each stroke. Easy instructions to backwash/clean as well as testing the filter.

by fromWorth the money XLE Elite Water Purifier by First Need is worth the cost, it is very easy to use and clean. I love the fact I can use it in unlimited water sources and get water right away. I plan on picking up a couple more to leave in my cars in the event my family is in need of a fresh water source.

by fromIndispensable Water Purifier I purchased this filter for a trek in Nepal back in 2005. Instead of carrying water and all that weight, I simply used one of the multitude of "fresh" water springs in the mountains. After many years of use.. I still love this filter system. I bring it with me wherever I go hiking in the PNW. I love being able to get more water when I need it. It's quick and attaches to several different water bottles with the built in threaded bottom. Water tastes good. I recommend to everyone.

by fromFun, useful, and small in a backpack. I never got sick drinking any of the purified water from this product. Its utility in keeping you safely hydrated is ineffable in that regard. As long as you are near water obviously. I used it in Nantahala National Forest. It processes water quickly and has two different screw rungs under the purifier which connects universally to ALL Nalgene's as far as I know. That in it's self, was totally worth the money. My 96 oz bladder canteen and water bottle were both Nalgene and it saved me a ton of time and worry. I am not sure if other water bottles fit. The smaller screw rung below the purifier probably connects to smaller water bottles- I am not sure never tried it. I also never tried the pouch you hang. Can't vouch for that as I was never camped near water sources. I probably put a 10-12 gallons through it. The pumping became slightly more difficult the more you use it which they inform you of as well. I also was running really really crystal clear mountain spring water through it thousands of feet up. So I really cannot attest to its effectiveness in dirtier water at lower elevations likely to be more contaminated by run-off etc. They company says the dirtier water you put through it, the less life on the purifier cartridge and the less gallons you will get out of it. They also say to run one pint of water through it after the dye test to clear out the charcoal and cartridge residue likely to go into your glass. I would recommend maybe 5 or 6 pints. Although they say these particles are harmless. I used to think it was expensive, but completely worth it and it works fast. Really cool product.

by fromJunk -5 stars I've been using this system for nearly 15 years and I'm feed up with it. I live in the SW US and the water is generally mineralized. I used to get about 25 gallons from a cartridge but with the last one I got 13. I was picky on where to pump, drew from clear water over 2 trips, Rae lakes loop in the California Sierras and the Chicago Basin loop in the Weminuiche in Colorado. This pump failed even with the back wash port.

by fromDisappointed I used a First Need filter my first 15 years of backpacking and loved it; I switched to Sweetwater after I wore out the First Need. After 15 years with the Sweetwater, I decided to switch back to my first love,First Need. My initial trip with the new First Need XLE Elite rendered it unusable...actually after only 2 days it clogged to the point where I could not pump it any more. We were fortunate to have an old cracked Katedyn as a back up. I will say that one of my companions had a brand new Katedyn that clogged as well. The stream from which we pumped the first night was rain swollen & silty, but we had no other choice. One might say that I tested the outer limits of the filter & it failed. On the positive side, the design of the filter is great making it easy to hold and use despite it being a bit heavy. Bottom line is that I need a new canister after only 2 days of use, but I am willing to give it a 2nd chance.

by fromGlad we had it along We boat-in only camp at back-country sites in Great Smokey Mountains National Park on Lake Fontana. We researched this filter on the REI website and decided it would be a good fit for us and how we planned to use it. Glad we had it along on our first trip! We had filled all our REI bottles with filtered water from home, and bought a 2.5 gal plastic jug of spring water as well. The plastic jug was leaking by the time we got to the boat launch with our gear. The filter worked great and provided nearly all the fresh water we needed for a weekend outing with our grandson. We filtered lake water into 3 qt. sauce pans for making hot drinks, washing dishes and drinking. It saved us and our trip. I will say that pumping got progressively harder as we pumped more water through it. We checked the filtration with the test kit that came with it. The filter was functioning properly. Pumping remains harder than when first used. We presume this occurs the more one pumps water through the canister. The lake water isn't particularly funky. The sediment filter worked great keeping all of the stirred up sediment from coming through. It is bulkier than other solutions we saw at the store and may not be the ideal option for backpacking. We focused more on volume than weight when selecting a filtration system. For car or boat camping it does the job.
