The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

by fromGreat Bag I got this bag a couple months ago and have checked it on two round-trip flights. So far the bag has held up very well and seems well built. The bag holds a lot of stuff, much more than the typical checked bag. On the first trip my wife packed 4 2-3" binders full of paper and about 3 weeks worth of clothing, including running shoes and steel toe boots, the bag was pretty full and weighted 48 pounds at the airport. On the second trip, we pack two pairs of hiking boots, two pairs of running shoes, clothing for a 4 days of hiking and hanging out in SOCAL, food for hiking and my wife's camelbak backpack and all of our toiletries. The bag on the second trip was 41 pounds. I think as long as you don't pack a bunch of tools or papers in the bag, you shouldn't bust the airline weight limit. I really like the external straps, but wish it had internal straps as well. The handle is nice, long enough for me (6 foot tall) to pull without kicking the bag and it rolls nice. It does not use standard inline skate wheels, so it might be hard to find a replacement years from now if needed.

by fromcracked wheel housing after 3 years of occasional vacation traveling (2-3 trips a year), one of the wheel housings cracked and the wheel no longer rolls. the bag does have some normal wear and tear (fraying around edges) but has held up well otherwise. i did bring it in to the seattle store today to see if they could repair or replace it, but the warranty does not cover "normal" wear and tear, and REI doesn't repair bags. i might look into osprey or eagle creek next time for their more extensive warranties and ability to repair their bags. otherwise, if you're looking for a good overall value, this is it.

by fromBeast as Advertised We have looked for a while to find the smallest wheeled duffle that would hold our walking sticks, allowing us to take them on airplanes. This product fills that need. The bag is light and sturdy for its size, with a large center compartment and small exterior zippered compartments. I took the bag on a test drive and it works well. We recommend zippered packing cubes (Rick Steves) to keep gear sorted in the large compartment. I'd leave the bag at home on a car trip.

by fromExcellent purchase I purchased this for a 15 day trip through Vietnam and Cambodia. It definitely did the trick. I left the States keeping it not full and it's got plenty of capacity left after purchases along the way. Through 10 flights and 7 hotels, it's held up with no damage. It would be nice to have a few additional outer pockets. I also got it in blue with the yellow stripped straps. It was $10 cheaper then the black & grey and it much easier to spot at the airport.

by fromTake it Overseas This is the largest size Wheely Beast that can be used as checked baggage on airline. I used it extensively in airports, on trains, and on streets of Italy. It moved smoothly. The wheels are still in great shape. The wheels don't swivel as on lightweight luggage, so don't expect to roll it through very tight spots. The slide-out handle feels strong. The grip handles, which have to be used to go up steps, are very strong and ergonomically correct in position. Time will tell on how the zippers hold up.

by fromDoes the job A group of 6 of us travelled for 3 weeks in South Africa, and 4 of us had the 28" Wheely Beast, two were the previous style, two were the current style. All of the Beasts were great. I could fit my hiking poles in (telescoped down), all the clothes I needed, and it was easy to move around. Loved the compression straps and handle. We rarely stayed anywhere for longer than a day or two, and were constantly packing and repacking our rented van and the Beasts stacked nicely and held up to the repeated loading and unloading. Highly recommend them for extended travel.
