REI Crestrail 70 Pack is rated 4.6154 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Pack Made Even Better I have carried quite a few backpacks over the last few years, including the Gregory Baltoro, Deuter Act Lite 65+10, and the previous version of this pack. Overall, I find the new Crestrail 70 to be the best of them all. I always said about the old Crestrail that the comfort rivalled the Baltoro, at one pound less weight. With this model, I say that the comfort is at least equal to the Baltoro, maybe even better, and again, at a pound less. The padding and backpad are nicely upgraded this year. That's the main difference. I like the color too, it's a really rich blue and the orange straps are a nice contrast. To me, this is the best all around backpack on the market. The REI branded equipment has really become top design and quality (I also have the Igneo sleeping bag and love it). This backpack is excellent in it's engineering, construction, features and, most of all, comfort. Nicely done, REI!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this pack! This is the best pack I have ever owned. It is reasonably priced and not too heavy for all of the features it packs. This is one of the few packs I own that doest require some compromise of essential features for me. It has everything, hip pockets that are expansive, excellent padding, tie-on or clip-on points, etc. The water bottle "locking" pockets are not only durable and reliable, but they are big enough and felxible enough to hold a other gear such as my jetboil stove. I admit that I was a little nervous about the light and somewhat flexing frame, but after using this on the john muir trail (3 weeks out, having to carry 40 pounds + at one resupply point), it really pulled through and kept me comfortable with the weight i was hauling. Compared to the gregory boltoro I much prefer this pack. I have a slender build and the baltoro, along with other firmer padded packs tend to cause bruises on my hip bones after a few days in the wilderness. Not with the cresttrail!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all around pack!!! This is the firt backpack I've ever purchased for hiking. My buddy is an even bigger hiker than I am so I usually used a few of his other backpacks. His packs are slightly outdated and heavy. He is planning on upgrading his packs as well. He is considering this pack after seeing how it performed when I went on my last trip with him. I recently went on a 5 day hiking trip on the Foothills trail in SC using this pack. The REI Crestrail 70L performed wonderfully on the trail. It is easy to pack and there is plenty of room and pockets to store all the necessities. The REI Crestrail 70L pack is a great all around pack. It is not the lightest pack on the market, and not the heaviest either, it does make up for weight in comfort. The hip belt straps are nicely padded and do a great job of bearing the load on the hips not the shoulders. The shoulder straps are nicely padded and comfortable as well. The load-lifter straps also help keep the pack snug against your back so your pack does not sway as you hike. The airflow system on the back of the pack does keep your back pretty cool. I sweat quite heavily anyway, but with my buddy's old packs, it was ridiculous. The REI Crestrail 70L does a pretty good job of keeping your back dry and cool. You will always sweat where the pack makes contact with your body. That is a given. To reduce sweat wear moisture wicking fabric shirts and shorts or pants. The compression straps are very sturdy and durable and do their job nicely. I really like the stretchy front pocket on this pack. I kept my MSR water filter pump in this pocket so I would not have to open the pack up for any reason during water re-supply. The water bottle pockets are big and roomy as well. They seem to be made out of the same stretchy material as the front pocket on the pack. I took two 32oz bottles and there was still room. They also have little compression pulls as well to sinch down the bottles. The loops for treking poles is a nice bonus to this pack as well. Only issue with this is that you will need a buddy to strap them on to the pack if you do not want to take the backpack off. If not, just take the pack off and put them on the pack. Not really an inconvenience if your hiking buddy or buddies don't mind. The hipbelt pockets are awesome. I have read and seen videos about the Osprey Atmos hipbelt pockets and how difficult they are to load once you have the pack on and strapped down. The hipbelt pockets on the REI Crestrail 70L have a really nice stretchy material that allows you to pack them while you have the pack on. They are similar to the material of the pocket on the front and water bottle pockets of the pack. I kept my camera and snacks for the day in them so I could eat on the go. This is also an added bonus as it saves time. Only stops were to eat lunch, water re-supply, and bathroom breaks; and picture moments of course. Overall, this pack is sturdy and does the job. Like I said before, it is not the lightest pack out on the market but it is very comfortable. My only complaint is the zippers are pretty tough. That does not mean they are faulty, they are just hard to pull and may snag due to the solid build quality and water resistant materials. If you don't go NASCAR on them, they will not snag. Slow and steady wins the race! I really like this pack. I have used it on only one extended trip thus far, so I cannot comment or review on its durability. Although its durability on this 5 day trip was amazing! I also cannot comment or review on its water resistance as it did not rain at all during our trip. But living in Florida, I am sure this will be tested soon enough. Everyone packs their packs differently and desires different features on backpacks, so do your research based on your packing and hiking style. This is a great product from REI and would recommend it to anyone as their first or even last backpack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic pack Fantastic pack. Took it out for a shakedown hike last weekend. In total it was a pretty short 14 mile trip to 5 lakes basin. It performed perfectly. By the time we made camp for the night I was the only one of 8 of us who wasn't sore or had shoulder ache. Everything on this pack adjusts so you can get it just the way you want it. The spot for the hydration bladder was awesome, and I had plenty of pockets and compartments to keep everything separate. Couldn't be happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's all good! I purchased this pack in the spring and took it on a 3 day 25 mile trip on Lake Superior's north shore and a 50 mile 6 day trip in the Black Hills. I was impressed with the pack's capacity and adjustibility. Even on the days when I carried 2 gallons of extra water the pack was comfortable and handled the weight well. I also used the back as a bear bag. It easily held 40 pounds of food suspended by the single nylon lift strap which rides normally behind the neck. Inspection after the trip revealed no strained seams. The two pouches held my water bottles securely and the top pouch had enough room for personal items and the group first aid kit. If you take the time you can adjust the pack to fit any torso length within its range with great precision. I did not observe any slippage in the velcro based torso adjustement system. Simply put, an excellent pack in all respects for backpacking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Confident on the trail I purchased this backpack as an upgrade from my Lookout 42, so I wouldn't have to hang my sleeping bag underneath on multinights. The 70L capacity was plenty for 3 nights (I pack fairly economical, taking just what I need). I could have actually packed a couple more days of food. One thing I liked was the newer design trekking pole attachment with the loop underneath. Not only did it securely hold my pole when I wasn't using it, but it was perfect for carrying my fishing pole. I have a 7 1/2 foot trout set up that breaks down in the middle. The handle dropped down in the loop and stopped at the reel. Kept it up high enough so that when I slipped off my pack, the pole didn't impact the ground. No more duct tape on over night fishing trips! Yeah! One issue I noticed was that the swiveling waist suspension, meant to offer some side to side give as you walk, started to squeak somewhere between the first 15 and 20 miles. For sure, we didn't see any cougars or bears. :) If there were any features I missed, it would be the side map pocket in my Lookout. That wasn't a big deal however. I used the cargo pockets in my shorts. Adding the extra pockets and zippers would have added weight, anyway. Overall, the pack performed brilliantly. Very high quality. Good zippers. Fairly light weight for it's capacity. Comfortable, even with a lot of weight (one trip about 55 lbs). And, it's a cool color, even though that doesn't really matter when you're looking for the proper pack...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Done I bought this to replace my old mountain hardwear bacpack, and compared to that thing this is a cadillac! It rides well and stays up on my hips even through rough parts of the trail. the hipbelt pivot feature works great to comform to your body as you move, and the pack does not seem to "sway" with you when you move. I used to strap my tent and sleeping bag on the exterior of the bag, but I can now stash them inside while still having ample room. The only drawback to this bag is that the sleeping bag compartment is a little small. I have a 20 degree mummy bag in reg. length, and I really have to compress it in order to get it in the bag. Asside from that, this pack has all the features that you would expect in any backpack, and manages to come in under alot of others bags in price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the money. hiked the AT for about a month with this pack and within the first week the zippers started to snag. After another 2 weeks the zippers stopped closing all together so i had to cram everything in another pocked or risk loosing all my items. This is the second REI pack that has done this to me so i have switched over to another brand.
